Mobile Toilet Theft Cases

Admin October 13, 2026

Two cases of mobile toilet theft both involve theft due to personal needs, with the suspects ultimately facing legal punishment.

Case 1: Theft of a Mobile Toilet on Longgang Road, Hefei
On the evening of August 29, 2023, near Longgang Road in Yaohai District, Hefei, a mobile toilet weighing several hundred pounds, designed for two people, made of blue steel plate, approximately 2 meters tall, and worth several thousand yuan, was stolen. The toilet was a custom-made product, just completed and ready for delivery. The suspect, Xia, acted with two accomplices, driving a tricycle, due to the large number of people in his family, the long time it took for the elderly to use the toilet, and the inconvenience of morning toilet use. Despite being spotted by security guards, they forcibly loaded the toilet onto the tricycle and fled. On the afternoon of September 1, the police discovered the hidden toilet under a residential building and apprehended Xia. Initially denying the theft, Xia later admitted his intention to steal the toilet for the elderly's use. Currently, the toilet's value is pending appraisal, Xia has been taken into criminal custody, and the case is under further investigation. In this case, Xia's impromptu theft due to family needs, despite the high value of the mobile toilet and its ownership by another party, constitutes the crime of theft.

Case 2: Theft of a Mobile Toilet during the Changzhou Marathon
On April 14, 2023, during the Jintan Maoshan Mountain Half Marathon, the organizing committee set up multiple mobile toilets along the route. Jiang, aged 56, after watching the race, due to the lack of toilets at the fishpond he was guarding and the unsanitary conditions caused by anglers relieving themselves anywhere, loaded a mobile toilet weighing about 200 pounds and worth 4,750 yuan onto his tricycle at around noon and transported it to the fishpond. At around 6 p.m. that evening, upon learning that someone was looking for the toilet, Jiang returned it and, at his own expense, mailed it to a company in Shanghai for forgiveness. On June 4, the Jintan District People's Procuratorate charged Jiang with theft; on June 19, the court found him guilty of theft and imposed a fine of 5,000 yuan. In this case, although Jiang returned the toilet and obtained forgiveness afterward, his theft was already completed, and the value of the mobile toilet was clear. The court, considering his self-surrender and restitution, imposed a lenient sentence, but he still had to bear criminal responsibility.

Commonalities between the Two Cases:

  1. Motivation to Solve Personal Needs: Both Xia and Jiang chose theft instead of legal means to obtain toilets, Xia due to family toilet inconvenience and Jiang due to fishpond sanitation issues.
  2. High Value of Mobile Toilets: Both toilets were worth several thousand yuan, exceeding the scope of ordinary property and meeting the criteria for filing a theft case.
  3. Clear Legal Consequences: Both suspects faced criminal charges, with Xia taken into custody and Jiang fined, demonstrating the law's zero tolerance for theft.
