"Tide Toilets" are an innovative model that dynamically adjusts toilet stall usage rights to alleviate the problem of women having difficulty finding toilets in tourist attractions, but standardized sign management is required to avoid confusion.

Core Mechanism of Tide Toilets
"Tide Toilets" set up gender-neutral toilet stalls and use movable signs or lockable sliding doors to dynamically adjust stall functions based on real-time foot traffic. For example, during peak times for women's toilet use, some men's stalls are temporarily converted to women's stalls, and vice versa. This model optimizes toilet stall resource allocation at a low cost and high efficiency, making it particularly suitable for tourist attractions with high visitor volumes and imbalanced gender ratios.
Practice and Issues at Guangdong Huizhou West Lake Scenic Area
Guangdong Huizhou West Lake Scenic Area once piloted "Tide Toilets," with male and female toilet signs at the entrance featuring a manually adjustable design that allowed staff to make adjustments as needed. However, this design led to three major issues due to ordinary visitors being able to change the signs at will:
- Confusion in toilet areas: Visitors mistakenly adjusting the signs caused the functions of male and female stalls to become disordered, leading to usage conflicts.
- Disorder in toilet queues: Frequent changes in signs caused confusion in the queuing lines, reducing toilet efficiency.
- Risk of privacy breaches: Visitors entering the wrong gender's stalls faced the risk of privacy violations, with a greater impact on children or special groups.
Improvement Measures and Future Directions
In response to the above issues, the scenic area has implemented two improvement measures:
- Removal of adjustable signs: All original manual signs have been replaced with fixed slot-type door plates, allowing adjustments only by authorized personnel using specialized tools, thereby preventing visitors from making changes at will.
- Optimization of dynamic management processes: Combined with an intelligent monitoring system, the usage of male and female toilet stalls is analyzed in real-time, and staff make unified adjustments to signs or sliding door states to ensure timely and accurate adjustments.
Currently, the "Tide Toilet" model has been promoted in many scenic areas across the country, with its core value lying in solving gender-specific toilet challenges through flexible resource allocation. In the future, with technological upgrades (such as dynamic electronic screen indicators and intelligent lock control systems), the management of tide toilets will become more refined, further balancing toilet demand and privacy protection.
