Location of Septic Tank for Mobile Toilets
The selection of the location for the septic tank of a mobile toilet requires a comprehensive consideration of factors such as terrain, wind direction, distance, and foundation pit positioning. Details are as follows:

1. Terrain and Drainage Conditions
The septic tank should be placed in an area with higher elevation and smooth drainage, maintaining a distance of approximately 1.5 meters from the main body of the mobile toilet. Higher elevation prevents rainwater backflow or ponding, which could cause the septic tank to float. Additionally, it is essential to ensure a reasonable drainage slope around the tank to prevent sewage overflow. If the selected location has lower elevation, measures such as elevation or additional drainage ditches should be taken to improve drainage conditions and avoid long-term ponding that could lead to structural damage or odor diffusion.
2. Wind Direction and Odor Control
Given that the prevailing wind direction in summer in China is southeast, the septic tank should preferably be placed on the north side or northwest corner of the mobile toilet, avoiding the south side or southeast side. If the septic tank is located downwind (e.g., on the south side), summer odors can easily drift into indoor or activity areas, affecting the user experience. Furthermore, the top of the septic tank should be sealed, and ventilation pipes should be installed to guide odors upward for emission, reducing lateral diffusion.
3. Distance and Pollution Prevention
The septic tank should be kept away from the main house and water sources (e.g., wells, rivers). It is recommended to maintain a distance of no less than 10 meters from the main house and no less than 30 meters from water sources to prevent sewage leakage from contaminating groundwater or soil. If the selected location is near a water source, impermeable materials (e.g., concrete, HDPE membranes) should be used to construct the septic tank, and water quality should be regularly monitored to ensure safety.
4. Foundation Pit Positioning and Pipe Design
The foundation pit for the septic tank should be determined based on the position of the toilet fixture, typically located outside the toilet enclosure wall, ensuring a straight layout for the sludge pipe (the pipe connecting the fixture to the septic tank) and minimizing the use of elbows. Excessive elbows increase the risk of blockage and affect sewage discharge efficiency. If elbows are necessary due to terrain constraints, large-radius elbows should be used and cleaned regularly.
5. Other Considerations
The septic tank should avoid being directly opposite the main entrance, sacred positions, or public activity areas, meeting both hygiene requirements and avoiding traditional taboos. Additionally, the location should consider construction convenience, avoiding being beneath roads, pipelines, or other infrastructure to reduce interference with later maintenance.
