How to Remove Odors from Mobile Toilets

Admin September 21, 2026

Odor removal in mobile toilets can be achieved through physical, chemical, biological, and integrated methods. Specific solutions are as follows:

Physical Odor Removal Methods

  1. Ventilation: Install exhaust fans or natural ventilation systems to accelerate air circulation and expel foul air. It is recommended to have at least 10 air changes per hour to ensure proper airflow within the toilet and reduce odor concentration.
  2. Activated Carbon Adsorption: Use high-iodine-value (≥1000mg/g) activated carbon, whose microporous structure efficiently adsorbs odor molecules such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia. Place 1-2 kg of activated carbon per cubic meter of space and replace it monthly to maintain adsorption effectiveness.

Chemical Odor Removal Methods

  1. Oxidizing Deodorizers: Utilize chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) solution with a concentration controlled between 0.1-0.3 ppm to oxidize and decompose odor substances like mercaptans and amines. It is recommended to spray every 4 hours for continuous odor removal needs.
  2. Masking Deodorizers: Use plant essential oil formulations containing limonene or citronellol to mask odors with fragrance molecules. Suitable for temporary event venues, with a duration of approximately 2-3 hours, requiring adjustment of spray frequency based on foot traffic.

Biological Odor Removal Methods

  1. Composite Microbial Agents: Apply microbial agents containing Bacillus subtilis (≥1×10⁸ CFU/g) and nitrifying bacteria to decompose urea in urine and proteins in feces. Add 50 g of microbial agents per 10 liters of excreta, achieving a decomposition efficiency of over 90%. Regularly replenish microbial agents to maintain activity.
  2. Biological Enzyme Deodorization System: Utilize immobilized enzyme reactors for continuous treatment of exhaust gases, achieving an ammonia removal rate exceeding 85% with an operating cost of approximately 0.5 yuan per cubic meter, suitable for long-term operation of mobile toilets.

Integrated Odor Removal Solutions

  1. Three-Stage Treatment System: Combine primary physical filtration (PP cotton + activated carbon), intermediate chemical oxidation (UV photocatalysis), and terminal biological degradation, achieving an overall odor removal efficiency of ≥95%, suitable for high-foot-traffic or odor-sensitive areas.
  2. Smart Control System: Link ammonia gas sensors (detection range 0-100 ppm) with spray devices to automatically trigger odor removal procedures when the concentration exceeds 20 ppm, enabling precise and automated management.

Auxiliary Method
Place a small cup of vinegar in a corner of the toilet to utilize the neutralization reaction between acetic acid and alkaline odor molecules (such as ammonia) to decompose odors. Replace it weekly to maintain effectiveness. This method is cost-effective and simple to operate, suitable for household or small mobile toilets.
