Mobile Toilet Marathon
Mobile toilets are crucial infrastructure in marathon events to ensure athletes' restroom needs. Their setup requires comprehensive consideration of factors such as the number of toilet stalls, spatial parameters, sewage systems, transportation deployment, and dynamic adjustments.

1. Optimization of Toilet Stall Quantity and Distribution In marathon events, the number of mobile toilet stalls needs to be dynamically adjusted based on the scale of participation. For example, the 2025 Beijing Marathon enhanced its support capabilities by increasing the number of toilet stalls: from 765 to 1,119 at the starting point, from 121 to 169 along the course, and from 151 to 161 at the finish line, totaling 1,449 stalls. However, having a sufficient number of stalls does not equate to a reasonable distribution. The 2026 Harbin Marathon witnessed athletes relieving themselves on roadside lawns, with officials attributing the issue to uneven toilet distribution, leading to long queues in some areas. Therefore, toilet stalls should be differentially allocated according to regions such as the starting point, along the course, and the finish line, and the ratio of male to female stalls should be dynamically adjusted based on registration data (usually with slightly more female stalls).
2. Spatial Parameters and Material Standards A standard mobile toilet stall for events typically measures 1.1 meters by 1.2 meters in area, with a height of no less than 2.2 meters. It is equipped with stainless steel or ceramic fixtures, a toilet paper holder, grab bars, hooks, and a non-slip floor. The ventilation system employs a top exhaust fan or natural ventilation windows, with some models featuring integrated lighting and ventilation fan switches. The materials are primarily high-density polyethylene or fiberglass-reinforced plastic, known for their corrosion resistance, UV resistance, and ease of cleaning, making them suitable for prolonged outdoor use over multiple days.
3. Sewage System Selection and Treatment Sewage systems are divided into direct-discharge and storage types: the direct-discharge type connects to municipal sewers or temporary septic tanks, suitable for fixed race segments; the storage type comes with a sealed 200-400 liter storage tank, using gravity or vacuum negative pressure to导入 (import/transfer) excreta, and adding biodegradable agents or chemical deodorizers to reduce odors. The Mount Wutai Marathon in Shanxi, with its course passing through mountainous areas and scenic spots where sewage pipes could not be laid in some sections, predominantly used storage-type toilets. After the event, specialized suction trucks transported the waste to sewage treatment plants for centralized processing.
4. Transportation Deployment and Stability Assurance Transporting mobile toilets requires consideration of vehicle load capacity, road width, and site flatness. Each unit weighs 80-120 kilograms, and a standard van can carry 10-20 units. During deployment, a level is used to adjust the height of the support legs to ensure toilet stability and prevent sewage backflow by tilting the sewage pipes. Fixing methods include ground anchor bolts or weighted water tanks. Toilets at the starting point, finish line, and refreshment stations are typically spaced 300-500 meters apart in groups, with each group containing 2-4 stalls.
