People Who Used Mobile Toilets and Got Accidentally Transported on Highways

Admin October 05, 2026

On May 11, 2025, three women—Xia Xia from Hangzhou, an older woman from Baoding, Hebei, and Ms. Zhang from Hebei—experienced an unexpected 'hitchhiking' incident after mobile toilets they were using were mistakenly loaded onto highways. Here are the details of the events:

Xia Xia from Hangzhou: At 3 p.m. on May 11, 2025, 23-year-old Xia Xia was using a mobile toilet marked '24-hour Convenience' in a parking lot at the West Lake scenic area when the toilet was mistakenly loaded onto a truck. The truck traveled 38 kilometers on the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour, taking 23 minutes. Xia Xia, crouched in a corner of the toilet, called the police for help. Afterward, the driver claimed he 'thought the toilet was abandoned equipment and didn't know someone was inside.' This incident revealed poor communication between the mobile toilet management and the transportation party, as the equipment's usage status was not clearly communicated, leading to the driver's misjudgment. Additionally, the lack of securing devices or warning signs on the toilet made it prone to misoperation during handling.

The Older Woman from Baoding, Hebei: That same afternoon, after the Baoding Marathon ended, an older woman entered a mobile toilet due to an urgent need while the organizers were clearing the site. Unaware of the external crane operations, the toilet was lifted onto a truck and rushed onto the highway. She noticed the road signs flying by through a crack in the door. Eventually, when the truck reached its destination, workers discovered her only when unloading. Netizens joked that she had experienced a 'highway toilet sightseeing tour.' This incident reflected flaws in the equipment clearance process after large-scale events, as the mobile toilets were not thoroughly inspected or isolated, allowing people to enter and be transported unintentionally.

Ms. Zhang from Hebei: At 3:17 p.m. on May 11, 26-year-old Ms. Zhang was using a blue-and-white mobile toilet at a highway service area in Hebei when the toilet was pulled off the ground by a hook-and-chain truck and rushed onto the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway, traveling 28 kilometers. Distracted by watching short videos, she did not notice the abnormality until the vehicle shook and honked, and she was eventually rescued after the traffic police stopped the vehicle. This incident indicated potential flaws in the securing methods of mobile toilets or non-standard operations by service area management during equipment handling, while the user's distraction prevented her from detecting the danger in time.

All these incidents were caused by non-standard management and handling procedures of mobile toilets or user negligence. It is necessary to strengthen equipment securing, warning sign placement, and operational process supervision to prevent similar accidents.
