Dining at High-End Restaurants with Toilet Culture Themes

Admin October 01, 2026

There are high-end restaurants themed around toilet culture, such as the 'Toilet Theme Restaurant' or 'Toilet Restaurant', which create a unique dining experience by incorporating toilet elements into the dining setting.

These restaurants originated in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China, with the first toilet-themed restaurant, 'MARTON', opening in April 2006, founded by Wang Ziwei and Lin Yuxuan. Their business concept stemmed from the creative extension of the founders' previous 'toilet ice' idea, aiming to attract customers through a sense of contrast. The restaurant's menu design is highly distinctive, divided into toilet series, bathtub series, and sink series, with food containers using miniature sanitary fixtures, such as toilet-shaped bowls and bathtub-shaped plates. The store's decor simulates a toilet environment, equipped with flush toilet seats, sinks, and toilet-themed lighting fixtures, while the tableware includes urinal-shaped containers and poop-shaped ice cream molds, presenting an exaggerated and fun style overall.

The naming and presentation of the dishes further reinforce the theme. For example, the 'Signature Golden Poop Rice' uses yellow rice to simulate the appearance of feces, while the 'Toilet Row Rice' layers various ingredients into a toilet-shaped container. Some dishes even adopt exaggerated names like 'Constipated Black Dry Poop', creating buzz through the dual impact of visuals and names. Although such designs may spark controversy, they indeed become the core selling points for attracting customers.

This type of restaurant subsequently expanded to multiple cities in mainland China, such as Beijing, Hangzhou, and Chongqing, and entered the international market, with the first branch opening in Los Angeles, USA. Kaohsiung, Taiwan, saw a peak of 12 similar restaurants opening, creating a规模化 (scaled) effect. Their target customer base is primarily young people, quickly gaining popularity through social media dissemination, with some outlets even becoming popular spots for internet celebrities to visit.

From a cultural perspective, these restaurants belong to a niche segment of themed dining, satisfying consumers' demand for novel experiences by deconstructing private scenes from daily life (such as toilets) and reconstructing them as public consumption spaces. Although the decor style and dish names may seem 'heavy-taste', their actual hygiene standards are no different from those of ordinary restaurants, creating an atmosphere solely through design aesthetics, reflecting the combination of commercial creativity and cultural expression.
