Making Simple Portable Toilets
Admin September 24, 2026
There are mainly two common methods for making simple portable toilets: using a water storage bucket and using a water storage tank with a pallet. Here are the specific introductions:

Making a simple portable toilet using a water storage bucket:
- Basic structure construction: Take out a water storage bucket from home and use an angle grinder to split it in half lengthwise. Prepare a wooden board and fix universal wheels at its four corners to facilitate moving the entire toilet. Then, take wooden strips and fix them to the upper side of the bucket with self-tapping screws to increase the height and provide space for installing other components later.
- Door and wall construction: Use an angle grinder to cut an opening on the side of the water storage bucket for the door. Install sponge strips on both sides of the opening to form a door frame, providing some sealing and cushioning effects. Insert plastic soft boards between the wooden strips to form raised walls, enhancing the privacy of the toilet. Place the upper half of the water storage bucket on top of the wooden strips as the roof. To improve aesthetics, paint the wooden strips with white waterproof paint.
- Door making: Use foam strips to拼接 (assemble) discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a simple door that meets basic opening and closing requirements.
- Drainage system installation: Cut a hole at the bottom of the bucket and install a drainage pipe to form a floor drain for easy sewage discharge. Cut holes on the side and bottom of the plastic bucket and install direct connectors. Place the plastic bucket on the roof to form a small water storage device for storing flushing water. Use a water pipe to make a simple heater (for heating purposes). Install a tee under the water inlet pipe and connect a showerhead for easy flushing. Place the toilet bowl on the opening of the drainage pipe, install the water tank, and fix it with glass glue to ensure the toilet is stable. Connect the drainage pipe to the sewage bucket to collect sewage. Horizontally connect a water pipe to the tee of the outlet pipe and extend it to the door as the water inlet pipe for the sink. Cut a hole in the door and install a connector to complete the hand-washing function.
Making a simple portable toilet using a water storage tank and a pallet:
- Mobile device installation: Take out a plastic pallet and fix a universal wheel at each of its four corners with tools to make the entire device movable. Subsequently, place the water storage tank and other components reasonably on the pallet and further build other structures of the toilet, such as fences and roofs, according to actual needs. However, this method is described relatively briefly in the reference information and can be improved and expanded according to the actual situation.
