Making Outdoor Portable Toilet
Admin September 24, 2026
There are mainly two methods for making an outdoor portable toilet: using a water storage barrel and using a water storage tank with a pallet. Details are as follows:

Making with a Water Storage Barrel
- Basic Structure Construction: Take out a water storage barrel from home and split it in half with an angle grinder. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for easy movement. Take a few wooden strips and fix them on the upper side of the barrel with self-tapping screws to increase the height.
- Wall and Roof Construction: Open a doorway on the side of the water storage barrel and install sponge strips on both sides of the doorway to form a door frame. Insert plastic soft boards between the wooden strips to form an elevated wall. Place the upper half of the water storage barrel on top of the wooden strips as the roof. Paint the wooden strips with white waterproof paint to enhance aesthetics.
- Simple Door Making: Use foam strips to splice discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a simple door.
- Drainage and Water System Installation: Open a hole at the bottom of the barrel and install a drain pipe to form a floor drain. Open holes on the side and bottom of the plastic barrel and connect them with direct fittings. Place the plastic barrel on the roof to form a small water storage device. Connect the water pipes made for a bath heater, install a three-way fitting below the water inlet pipe and connect a showerhead. Place the toilet on the drain pipe opening, install the water tank properly and fix it with glass glue. Connect the drain pipe to the sewage tank. Horizontally connect a water pipe to the three-way fitting of the outlet pipe and extend it to the doorway as the water inlet pipe for the sink. Open a hole on the door and install a fitting.
Making with a Water Storage Tank and a Pallet
- Mobile Pallet Preparation: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of a pallet and place a water storage tank recovered from a garbage station on the pallet.
- Water Storage Tank Modification: Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line on the top of the water storage tank to remove the top and form an open tank. Invert another open-top water storage tank and stack it on the first tank. Fix the outer frames of the two water storage tanks with self-tapping screws.
- Doorway and Drainage Setup: Cut a rectangular opening with a height of 180 cm and a width of 50 cm on the outer frame of the water storage tank. Cut the tank body according to the corresponding size to form a doorway. Open a hole on the internal floor of the water storage tank, insert an elbow from the bottom upwards and connect it to a water pipe. Seal it with glue and cut off the excess water pipe.
- Sanitary Ware Installation: Place the toilet in alignment with the drain opening and fix it with glue. Fix a water pipe on the wall clip and install a faucet. Fix a pipe cap with screws below the faucet, connect a water pipe to the pipe cap and open a hole as the outlet of the drain pipe. Apply glass glue to the pipe cap and fix a sink made of a stainless steel basin. Connect the water inlet pipe to the toilet water tank, connect the shower hose and install a shower bracket. Install a toilet seat and a spray-type showerhead made of water pipes.
- Door Installation: Bring a wooden board and fix hinges on the frame of the water storage tank. Fix the other side of the hinges to the wooden board to form the door of the toilet. Install a door handle on the door.
