Knock Down the Toilet Wall and Move It Inwards

Admin October 22, 2026

Before knocking down the toilet wall and moving it inwards, it is essential to confirm whether the wall is a load-bearing wall. Only non-load-bearing walls can be modified, and the legality of the modification must be judged based on specific circumstances.

Conditions for Wall Modification

If you intend to knock down the toilet wall and move it inwards, the primary task is to determine whether the wall to be demolished is a load-bearing wall. Load-bearing walls are crucial components of a building's structure that bear the main load. Removing them can severely compromise building safety, so they must never be removed arbitrarily. Only after confirming that it is a non-load-bearing wall can you consider subsequent modification measures.

Methods for Modifying Non-Load-Bearing Walls

There are two common methods for modifying non-load-bearing walls:

  • Using Foam Bricks for Wall Construction: Utilize 8CM-thick foam bricks, standing them up to form an I-shaped wall. Every 80cm, insert a 6mm steel bar under high pressure to enhance the wall's structural strength. Subsequently, apply cement mortar to both sides of the wall for plastering, ensuring a flat surface with certain waterproof properties.
  • Adopting Light Steel Keel Structure: Use 7.5cm light steel keels as the framework, cover the surface with cement pressure boards, and fill the interior with sound-absorbing rock wool to increase sound insulation. After completing these steps, plastering is also required to make the wall meet usage requirements.

Judging the Legality of Modification

Whether knocking down the toilet wall and moving it inwards is illegal must be judged based on specific circumstances:

  • If the load-bearing wall or the main structure of the building is moved without obtaining a design plan from the original design unit or a qualified design unit, it constitutes an illegal act, violating the provisions of the Construction Project Quality Management Regulations regarding the safety of the building's main structure.
  • If a non-load-bearing structural wall is moved but without obtaining written consent from the property management office or violating the community's decoration management regulations, it may violate the Property Management Regulations, constituting illegal decoration.
  • If moving the wall affects the normal life of adjacent residents, such as damaging the waterproof layer and causing leaks, it may violate the相邻关系 (neighborly relations) provisions of the Civil Code, requiring the assumption of tort liability.
  • If the modification does not affect building safety, after evaluation by a professional institution, relevant departments may reduce or waive penalties based on the actual situation.
  • If, before moving the toilet wall, approval has been obtained from relevant departments such as the urban and rural planning authorities, and construction is carried out in accordance with the approved design plan, then the act is legal.
