Production of Simple Portable Toilets in Japan

Admin October 09, 2026

The Japanese simple portable toilet, minimLET, is primarily composed of six parts: a C-shaped seat ring, four lightweight aluminum rods, garbage bags, lightweight canvas (or tent), coagulant, and a backpack. Here are the production and usage methods:

Basic Production and Usage When producing, fix the garbage bag onto the C-shaped seat ring, ensuring that the bag opening fully fits the edge of the seat ring to prevent leakage of excrement. Then, insert the four lightweight aluminum rods into the pre-reserved holes at the bottom of the seat ring to form a stable four-legged support structure. When using, the user needs to wear the lightweight canvas like a raincoat, covering the whole body to protect privacy, and then simply sit on the fixed seat ring to complete excretion. This design enables rapid setup through modular combination, making it suitable for single-person use in emergency scenarios.

Advanced Modification and Functional Expansion The connecting accessories of the C-shaped seat ring support the use of alternative supports: if there are not enough aluminum rods, four beverage bottles filled with sand or fixed cans can be inserted into the bottom of the seat ring to stabilize the structure through gravity. In this case, the extra aluminum rods can be combined with an umbrella—fix the edge of the canvas to the umbrella frame to form a top cover, and use the aluminum rods to support the sides of the canvas, creating a simple “privacy space”. This modification requires ensuring that the canvas is firmly connected to the supports to avoid structural instability in windy and rainy weather.

Reuse of Multi-functional Accessories

  • Canvas/tent: Made of nylon material, in addition to providing shelter, it can also be worn as a poncho to offer temporary rain protection or warmth.
  • Backpack: Made of waterproof material with a capacity of 16 liters. In addition to storing all components, it can be used as a water storage container in emergencies for cleaning or flushing.
  • Coagulant: After excretion, sprinkle it into the garbage bag to quickly solidify the liquid, reduce odors, and prevent leakage, facilitating subsequent disposal.

Core Design Advantages minimLET achieves portability through standardized interfaces and lightweight materials (such as aluminum rods and nylon cloth), keeping the total weight at a low level and making it suitable for personal carrying. Its modular design allows users to flexibly adjust the structure according to the environment, for example, relying on aluminum rods when there are no trees or fixed objects, and using beverage bottles as alternatives when resources are limited, reflecting the Japanese design philosophy of “minimalism but multi-functionality”.
