Japan House Construction Container

Admin September 15, 2026

The use of containers in house construction in Japan is indeed a reality, with diverse application scenarios including accommodation for Asian Games athletes, business hotels, and studios.

  1. Accommodation for Asian Games athletes: The organizing committee for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games announced plans to build container houses at the Nagoya Port Garden Pier as accommodation facilities for athletes, expected to accommodate approximately 2,000 people. Each unit consists of two households, with each household planned as a two-bedroom, one-living-room layout providing accommodation for three people. The entire house features wooden decor, equipped with toilets, bathrooms, changing rooms, refrigerators, sinks, washing machines, and air conditioners. However, due to the relatively small space and low height of the container houses, the overall space feels somewhat crowded and oppressive. Moreover, each container house is equipped with only one air conditioner, which may make it feel stuffy if the room door is closed.
  2. Business hotels: Japan's first business hotel built using recycled container houses, "HOTEL R9 SANOFUJIOKA," opened in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture. The container house materials used in this hotel were previously employed for accommodation facilities for reconstruction workers after the earthquake and were later recycled and relocated to Tochigi Prefecture, demonstrating the environmental friendliness and reusability of container houses.
  3. Studios and creative spaces: On the streets of Japan, there are studios and galleries transformed from containers. These container buildings feature stylish and novel exteriors, with their interior spaces cleverly designed to meet the dual functional needs of galleries and studios. For example, some projects use 12-meter-long shipping containers, which, through cutting and splicing, form unique triangular areas and staircases, adding a sense of layering and interest to the space.
  4. Other applications: Container houses in Japan are also used for various scenarios such as workers' dormitories and temporary building camping tents. These container houses typically feature rapid construction, easy relocation, and modular design, enabling them to meet the architectural functional requirements of different fields.
