Japan Container House Villa

Admin September 15, 2026

Container house villas exist in Japan, but they are mostly temporary or functional housing for specific scenarios, with significant differences from the conventional concept of villas. Details are as follows:

Container Houses in the Asian Games: Temporary Accommodation Facilities

To cut costs, the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games did not build a traditional athletes' village. Instead, it used cruise ships, container houses, and hotels to accommodate athletes and officials in a dispersed manner. Among them, about 200 container-style accommodation facilities are neatly arranged in the Nagoya port area, expected to house about 2,000 athletes and team officials. These container houses are called 'Asian Games Villas', but the actual conditions are relatively simple. Each unit consists of two households, with each household planned as a two-bedroom and one-living-room layout, providing accommodation for three people. The entire house is decorated with wood, featuring one toilet, one bathroom, and a dressing room. The small space in the living room is equipped with a refrigerator and a sink, and also provides a washing machine and an air conditioner. However, the beds are single beds, measuring 195 cm in length and 90 cm in width, which is cramped for tall athletes. In double-bed rooms, there is only a walkway wide enough for one person to stand between the two beds, making the space quite narrow. The height of the container houses is also not high, resulting in an overall sense of crowding and oppression. In addition, some container houses are far from the competition venues, and the commuting time for athletes to and from the venues exceeds one hour, affecting the competition experience.

Container Elements in Shared Villas: Innovative Living Models

'SANU 2nd Home' is a shared villa service that focuses on four systems: Stay, Subscription, Co-Owners, and Owners, with locations in multiple places across Japan. Although its promotions do not explicitly mention container house villas, this shared villa model reflects Japan's innovative exploration in the field of housing, sharing certain similarities with the flexible and low-cost living concept represented by container house villas. Some shared villas may incorporate container elements in their design and renovation to reduce costs, improve construction efficiency, and meet people's demand for unique living experiences.
