Is It Good to Live in a Container House for a Long Time?
Container houses can be lived in for a long time, but certain conditions must be met and relevant issues need to be addressed. Overall, there are many challenges to long-term living, and most people believe it is not very suitable for long-term residence.

Conditions for Long-Term Residence: To live in a container house for a long time, multiple modifications are required. Structurally, walls need to be reinforced, and insulation, waterproofing, and fireproofing performance should be optimized. In terms of comfort design, install insulation layers, ventilation systems, and heating equipment. For supporting facilities, ensure that water and electricity pipelines, drainage systems, and kitchen and bathroom facilities are complete. Moreover, it must pass safety inspections by relevant departments and meet local residential building regulations.
Problems Faced in Long-Term Residence:
- Thermal Insulation: Container materials are mostly metal, which has high thermal conductivity. They tend to overheat in summer and get too cold in winter. Insulation materials such as rock wool and foam boards need to be installed on walls and roofs, and air conditioning or underfloor heating systems should be installed to cope with temperature differences.
- Moisture and Corrosion Resistance: In humid areas, containers are prone to rust and corrosion. Anti-rust treatment should be applied to the external metal, and a moisture-proof layer should be installed inside.
- Space Limitations: Standard containers have limited area, usually 20 - 40 square meters. The living area needs to be expanded through reasonable layout or by combining multiple containers.
- Living Comfort: In terms of ventilation and lighting, additional windows, skylights, or vents should be installed to avoid an overly enclosed living environment. For noise isolation, soundproof materials should be added to reduce interference from external environmental noise.
- Legality and Approval: The legal regulations regarding container houses vary in different regions. It is necessary to confirm whether they comply with local building permit standards.
Other Unfavorable Factors: Container houses have poor sound insulation, and external noise can easily enter, affecting sleep quality. Their service life is relatively short, about 10 - 15 years, and safety hazards increase with the number of years of use. In terms of legal risks, those who change the building's purpose and live in it illegally without permission may face severe penalties or even criminal liability. Most people in the market believe that container houses are not suitable for long-term residence due to uncertainties in aspects such as small space, poor handling of modification details, property rights, planning approval, fire protection, as well as the concept of 'temporary buildings'.
