Is Container House Export Profitable?
Admin September 15, 2026
The container house export market is performing well and has significant growth potential. Here is a detailed analysis:

Significant Growth in Export Data
- Overall Export Value Increase: In the first half of 2026, China's total export value of prefabricated buildings under HS code 9406 reached $2.79 billion, a year-on-year increase of 45%. Among them, steel-structured modular houses were the main export category, with overseas market demand maintaining rapid growth.
- Outstanding Data from Some Ports: In the first four months of 2026, enterprises across the country exported movable houses worth 1.68 billion yuan through the Shenzhen port, a year-on-year increase of 19.6%, with goods shipped to more than 150 countries and regions.
Strong Overseas Market Demand
- Cost Advantages Attract Purchases: Taking the US market as an example, for houses of the same specifications, the total landed cost of modular houses made in China is significantly lower than that of locally built houses in the US, and the construction period is greatly shortened. Additionally, Chinese modular houses, without ground hardening or foundation laying, are not strictly considered 'real estate' in local terms and can bypass property taxes (which vary by state regulations).
- Addressing Overseas Construction Pain Points: The overseas construction industry faces a large labor gap and high labor costs, with long construction periods for traditional houses. Chinese container houses, with most construction processes completed in the factory and quick on-site assembly, can save a significant amount of labor and time costs, meeting overseas market demands.
Product Advantages Boost Exports
- Reduced Transportation Costs: Optimized designs such as foldable container houses and dual-wing expandable houses significantly reduce volume when folded, allowing more sets of houses to be loaded into a single 40-foot high cube container. This directly reduces sea freight costs per set by more than 60%, with the advantage becoming more pronounced over longer distances.
- High Reusability: With the ability to be reused multiple times, container houses can be folded again after project completion and transported to the next project for reuse, meeting overseas customers' needs for cost control and sustainable development.
- Increased Focus on Compliance and Low-Carbon Attributes: Procurement ends such as engineering camps, cultural tourism, and emergency response are increasingly focusing on the recyclability, cross-border compliance, and low-carbon attributes of detachable and relocatable container houses. Products with these attributes account for more than 60% of orders and are gradually becoming the mainstream procurement direction in the industry.
