How About Mobile Toilets at Intersections

Admin October 10, 2026

Mobile toilets at intersections generally have strong applicability, but they have both advantages and disadvantages, and their suitability depends on specific scenarios and management levels.

Advantages

  • Flexible and rapid deployment: Their modular design allows the main structure and internal facilities to be installed in the factory, eliminating the need for complex civil engineering work. They can be hoisted, connected to water and electricity within a few hours. For example, the installation of a standard single mobile toilet usually takes no more than 4 hours, enabling a quick response to the sudden increase in pedestrian traffic during large-scale events at intersections or the lack of infrastructure in newly developed areas.
  • Efficient space utilization: They do not rely on large-scale infrastructure or specific underground sewage pipe connections. They can be placed on flat ground such as the corners of intersections, achieving intensive land use and being suitable for urban core areas or intersection scenarios with limited land resources.
  • Significant environmental protection and energy conservation: They generally use water-saving sanitary ware. For example, vacuum toilets flush with only 1 - 2 liters of water per use, and some are equipped with septic tanks or microbial degradation systems. High-end products have solar power supply, automatic ventilation, and intelligent deodorization functions. Some adopt waterless treatment technologies, and the final products can be used as basic raw materials for organic fertilizers. Some have solar panels installed on the top to reduce operating energy consumption.
  • Wide range of applicable scenarios: They can serve as a supplement to urban public toilets, solving the problem of insufficient public toilets in old urban areas and busy streets near intersections. During the tourist peak season or at temporary attractions, they can be added to relieve the toilet pressure for tourists. They provide sanitary facilities for construction site workers and can be quickly set up after disasters to prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Strong mobility: They can adapt to changes in the intersection site, reducing the waste of resources from the demolition of fixed facilities. For example, during the tourist peak season in Dalian, mobile public toilets are flexibly deployed to relieve the toilet pressure in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.
  • Small footprint: Compared with traditional fixed toilets, they occupy less land resources at intersections.
  • Considerate appearance design: In addition to practicality, appearance design is also considered, making them suitable for improving the city's image in areas such as intersections.

Disadvantages and Challenges

  • Maintenance costs and operation management: They require regular cleaning of septic tanks and replenishment of disinfectants and cleaning supplies. Poor management can easily lead to problems such as odors and blockages, with a single cleaning and transportation cost of about 50 - 150 yuan.
  • Limited comfort and space: The size of the container limits the internal space, making it unfriendly to people with mobility impairments or those carrying large items. Although some have barrier-free facilities, the overall comfort is not as good as that of large fixed public toilets.
  • Weak resistance to damage and security: Most of them are light-weight structures with weak wind and impact resistance. Fixed measures need to be taken, and attention should also be paid to their anti-theft and fire prevention performance.
  • Difficulties in winter use: In cold northern regions, if there are no insulation layers and heating systems, water pipes and sanitary ware are prone to freezing and damage.
  • Limited water tank capacity: They can serve a maximum of about 200 people per use before needing replenishment. When the continuous use frequency at intersections is high, maintenance personnel need to clean and discharge sewage more frequently.
