Indian Women's Mobile Toilets

Admin September 22, 2026

India has introduced various forms of mobile toilets to address women's safety issues during toilet use, which have been widely welcomed by women.

Portable Urinals: In India, due to traditional beliefs and limitations in infrastructure, many households and public places lack toilets, forcing women to resort to defecating in the wild. This exposes them to numerous safety hazards, such as bites from snakes, insects, and rodents, as well as attacks from malicious individuals. To change this situation, India has invented portable urinals. These urinals allow women to urinate while standing, just like men, greatly enhancing the convenience and safety of women's toilet use. Since their invention, portable urinals have been enthusiastically embraced by Indian women and have become an important tool for them to solve toilet-related issues.

Mobile Toilets as Dowry: In a village in Maharashtra, India, a symbolic event took place. Bride Zaidali's father, concerned about her dignity after marriage due to the lack of a toilet in her fiancé's home, presented a mobile toilet as dowry. This incident reflects Indian women's desire for independent toilets and highlights the importance of mobile toilets in addressing women's toilet-related problems. As dowry, mobile toilets not only provide practical convenience for the bride but also symbolize respect and protection for women's rights.

Bus Mobile Toilets: In 2016, Ulka Sadalkar and Rajeev Kher made an innovative attempt in Pune, India, by transforming old municipal buses into mobile public toilets for women, named Ti Toilet. These buses are fully equipped with amenities, including a television, two sinks, a large mirror, three Indian-style toilets, and one Western-style toilet. To promote environmental protection and energy conservation, most buses are powered by solar energy and offer Wi-Fi services. Users only need to pay 5 rupees (approximately 0.5 yuan) to access facilities such as showers, diaper-changing stations, sanitary napkins, drinking water, and breastfeeding spaces. The emergence of bus mobile toilets has provided Indian women with a safe, comfortable, and convenient toilet environment and has been widely praised.
