How to Unload Container Houses

Admin September 15, 2026

The unloading of container houses mainly employs the vertical loading and unloading method (lifting method) and the horizontal loading and unloading method (roll-on/roll-off method). The specific operation should be carried out in combination with the equipment type and scene characteristics.

Vertical Loading and Unloading Method (Lifting Method)

The vertical loading and unloading method relies on lifting machinery to complete the vertical lifting and placement of containers, suitable for dedicated container terminals or sites equipped with lifting equipment.

  • Equipment Selection:
    • Quayside Container Crane: Used for container loading and unloading between ships and terminals, with a large lifting capacity and high efficiency.
    • Yard Machinery: Includes straddle carriers (flexible movement in the yard), rubber-tired gantry cranes (high mobility), rail-mounted gantry cranes (excellent stability, running along rails), and chassis trucks (convenient connection to transportation links).
  • Operation Points:
    • Ensure that the lifting capacity of the lifting machinery meets the total weight requirements of the container (including goods) to avoid overloading.
    • Before lifting, check the container seal and the integrity of the container body to prevent goods from scattering or the container body from being damaged.
    • During operation, keep the lifting device aligned with the center of the container to avoid tilting, which could cause goods to shift or the equipment to overturn.

Horizontal Loading and Unloading Method (Roll-on/Roll-off Method)

The horizontal loading and unloading method achieves the horizontal movement of containers through equipment such as tractors and forklifts, without the need for lifting, suitable for ports, stations, or factory cargo areas.

  • Operation Process:
    • Loading onto Ship: Place the container on a chassis truck (trailer), and the tractor tows the trailer through the ramp into the ship's hold and unhooks to complete loading.
    • Unloading from Ship: After the ship arrives at the port, the forklift lifts the container from the ship's hold onto the trailer, and the tractor train tows it to the terminal yard; or the forklift alone can directly load and unload through the ramp.
  • Scene Adaptation:
    • Port: The trailer and forklift work together to achieve rapid transfer of containers between the ship and the yard.
    • Station: Forklifts or parallel loading and unloading machines undertake the task of transshipment to ensure a smooth connection between different transportation vehicles.
    • Factory Cargo Area: Use a container gantry crane to directly lift the container to complete loading for outward transportation or unloading for warehousing, supporting multi-layer stacking of containers to save space.

Special Scene Operation Specifications

  • Sloped Road Surface: If the front of the vehicle is facing uphill, first raise the rear end of the carriage; if the front is facing downhill, first raise the front end to maintain vehicle balance.
  • Soft Ground: Evaluate the ground bearing capacity and, if necessary, lay wooden planks under the wheels to increase the support area.
  • Severe Weather: In case of heavy rain, strong winds, etc., slow down the operation speed and strengthen the fixation of goods to prevent them from sliding or overturning.
