How to Replace a Tile Roof with Prefabricated Panels

Admin September 19, 2026

Replacing a tile roof with prefabricated panels requires strict adherence to construction specifications and should be carried out by a professional team based on the building's structure. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Pre-construction Preparation

  1. Site Inspection
Verify the original roof structure type (e.g., brick-concrete or frame structure), roof panel material (concrete or profiled steel sheet), and the strength of the supporting brackets. Focus on checking for cracks, exposed rebar, or other damage on the original roof panels. If structural defects are found, reinforcement must be carried out in advance.
  2. Plan Preparation
Develop a specialized construction plan based on the inspection results, specifying the demolition sequence, protective measures, and material replacement plans. For example, when replacing the original tile structure with prefabricated panels, adjust the reinforcement design to meet load requirements. The plan must be approved by the design and supervision units.
  3. Material Inspection
Prefabricated panels must be accompanied by strength test reports. Upon arrival, verify the certificates and test reports, and conduct on-site sampling and re-inspection (e.g., compressive strength tests) to ensure the materials meet standards.
  4. Protective Facility Setup
Install 1.2-meter-high guardrails around the roof perimeter, add 18-centimeter-high toe boards at the bottom, and hang dense safety nets on the outside to prevent falling objects during construction.

II. Demolition of the Old Roof

  1. Removal of Ancillary Facilities
Prioritize the removal of ancillary facilities such as lightning rods and solar water heaters to avoid safety hazards from falling objects during demolition.
  2. Tile and Base Layer Cleaning
If the original tiles are tightly connected to the base layer, gradually pry the tiles and clean the base layer to ensure no residual debris remains, providing a flat foundation for subsequent construction.
  3. Structural Inspection
After demolition, inspect structural components such as roof beams and parapet walls for integrity. Mark parts that need to be retained and promptly repair any structural damage found.

III. Installation of New Prefabricated Panels

  1. Base Layer Treatment
Thoroughly clean debris from the roof to ensure the base layer is flat and free of gaps, preventing uneven stress on the prefabricated panels after installation due to an uneven base.
  2. Laying of Prefabricated Panels
Lay the prefabricated panels on the roof according to construction specifications, ensuring tight connections between panels and that the levelness meets requirements (avoiding unevenness that could affect drainage and structural stability).
  3. Fixing and Reinforcement
Fix the prefabricated panels according to design requirements (e.g., welding or bolt connections). If necessary, add soundproofing and thermal insulation accessories to enhance the roof's overall performance.

IV. Inspection and Maintenance

  1. Project Inspection
After construction, conduct a comprehensive inspection of the roof's flatness, waterproofing, and structural safety to ensure compliance with standards such as the "Roof Engineering Quality Acceptance Specifications."
  2. Regular Maintenance
Regularly inspect the roof's integrity and promptly address potential issues such as cracks and water leakage to extend the service life of the prefabricated panels.

Precautions:

  • Construction must comply with national building standards such as the "Technical Code for Safety of High-altitude Operation in Building Construction" and avoid working in adverse weather conditions such as rain or strong winds.
  • Operate slowly when demolishing the old roof to prevent damage to the underlying structure.
  • Replacing prefabricated panels may involve structural modifications. It is advisable to consult a structural engineer in advance and complete relevant approval procedures.
