How to Replace the Door Lock of a Container House

Admin September 17, 2026

The replacement of the door lock of a container house can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Tool Preparation

Prepare a wrench, a slotted screwdriver. If you need to replace the lock body, you also need to prepare a power drill or an electric wrench. These tools are the foundation for completing the door lock replacement. The wrench is used to remove and install nuts, the slotted screwdriver is used to unscrew slotted screws, and the power drill or electric wrench comes into play when you need to drill new holes for installing a new lock.

II. Removal of the Old Lock

  1. Open the container door and use the wrench to remove the lock nuts. If there are slotted screws, use the screwdriver to unscrew them. Be careful during this step to avoid damaging the nuts and screws.
  2. Unscrew the screws connecting the lock tongue, gently pull the lock tongue to make it detach from the lock housing. Do not forcefully pull it, as this may damage the lock tongue or the lock housing.

III. Installation of the New Lock

  1. Adaptation and Adjustment: Compare the size of the new lock, measure the door thickness and the distance from the center of the lock hole to the edge of the door to ensure they match the parameters of the new lock. If there is a deviation, you can slightly sand the door hole with a file or sandpaper to ensure the new lock body can be inserted smoothly. If you need to drill new holes, mark the hole positions in advance with a pencil to prevent drilling in the wrong place and damaging the door panel.
  2. Installation Process: First, insert the lock body into the door opening, align the side fixing holes, and temporarily fix it with screws. Then, install the strike plate, attach it to the edge of the door, align the holes, and tighten the screws. Next, install the door handles. Pass the connecting rods of the inner and outer handles through the door hole, align them with the transmission parts of the lock body, and tighten the fixing screws on the inner side of the handles to ensure smooth rotation without jamming. Finally, install the lock cylinder, insert it into the door hole, fix it with the matching screws, and insert the key to test if the switch operates smoothly.

IV. Debugging and Testing

After installation, repeatedly open and close the door to test. Ensure that the key can be inserted and removed normally, the lock tongue can pop out and retract smoothly, both the inner and outer handles can drive the lock tongue properly, and the strike accurately fits into the strike plate slot when the door is closed, with no looseness or abnormal noise. If the lock tongue and the strike plate are not aligned, slightly adjust the position of the strike plate until the door opens and closes completely smoothly.

Precautions: Before disassembly, ensure that the container is stationary and place wheel chocks to prevent it from sliding. Avoid using excessive force or non-professional tools to prevent damage to the lock or the container structure. After disassembly, apply lithium-based grease to the rotating shaft parts. In winter at low temperatures, it is advisable to use anti-freeze lubricating oil with a -30℃ rating. If you lack experience, it is recommended to contact a professional for operation.
