How to Move a Bathtub in a Small Bathroom

Admin October 07, 2026

The method for moving a bathtub in a small bathroom depends on its installation type and material. Here are the specific steps:

1. Determine the Bathtub Installation Type

  • Built-in Bathtub: If the bathtub is embedded in the wall or floor and tightly integrated with fixed structures like tiles and cement, you'll need to first damage the surrounding decorative layers when moving it. Use professional tools (such as electric hammers and angle grinders) to gradually remove the tiles and adhesive, taking care not to damage the bathtub itself. This process may generate dust, so proper protective measures should be taken.
  • Non-built-in Bathtub: If the bathtub is placed directly on the floor (such as a freestanding cast-iron or acrylic bathtub), moving it is relatively simple. First, turn off the main water supply valve, disconnect the drainage pipe connections (such as PVC or metal pipes), and clean out any residual water in the pipes to prevent leakage during transportation.

2. Prepare Moving Tools and Pathways

  • Tool Selection: Choose appropriate tools based on the weight of the bathtub (cast-iron bathtubs can weigh over 200kg). Lightweight bathtubs can be moved manually, while heavy ones require hydraulic jacks, pulley systems, or professional lifting equipment.
  • Pathway Clearance: Measure the dimensions of the bathtub and the widths of the bathroom door and hallway to ensure a clear moving pathway. Remove obstacles such as thresholds and floor mats, and if necessary, dismantle the bathroom door frame or enlarge the opening.

3. Execute the Moving Operation

  • Tilt Moving Method: In narrow spaces, tilt the bathtub to one side (at an angle not exceeding 30°) and move it slowly using the principle of leverage. At least three people should work together, with one person stabilizing the bottom of the bathtub and two others controlling the tilt direction to prevent tipping.
  • Pulley Assistance Method: Place wooden boards or special pulleys under the bathtub and drag it horizontally using manual or traction equipment. This method is suitable for flat floors, and care should be taken to control the speed to prevent collisions.
  • Segmented Disassembly Method: If the bathtub is too large to pass through the pathway, disassemble it into movable parts (such as separating the skirt of an acrylic bathtub). Mark the positions of the parts after disassembly for easy reassembly later.

4. Precautions

  • Safety Protection: Wear anti-slip gloves, goggles, and dust masks when moving to avoid scratches or inhaling dust.
  • Structural Protection: Wrap foam boards or old towels around the edges of the bathtub to prevent磕碰 (knocks) against walls or floors during transportation.
  • Professional Assistance: If the bathtub is made of special materials (such as stone or cast iron) or has a complex installation, it is advisable to contact a decoration company or professional moving team to reduce the risk of damage.

After moving, check that the drainage pipe connections are tight and reseal the joints between the bathtub and the floor and walls to prevent water leakage.
