How to Make a Simple Portable Toilet

Admin October 10, 2026

A simple portable toilet can be made using a water storage tank. Here are the specific steps:

I. Basic Structure Construction

  1. Water Storage Tank Modification: Select a large water storage tank and use an angle grinder to split it vertically in the middle, creating two semi-circular tank bodies. Choose one of them as the main body of the toilet and keep the other one as a spare.
  2. Mobile Base Construction: Install universal wheels at the four corners of a flat wooden board to ensure mobility. Fix the bottom of the split water storage tank onto the wooden board to form a mobile base.
  3. Height Adjustment and Wall Reinforcement: Use wooden strips and self-tapping screws to fix them along the upper edge of the tank, increasing the overall height of the toilet and providing support for the subsequent installation of walls.

II. Functional Module Installation

  1. Door and Wall Installation: Cut a doorway on the side of the water storage tank using an angle grinder. Install sponge strips on both sides to form a door frame. Embed plastic soft panels between the wooden strips to create raised walls, ensuring privacy.
  2. Roof and Decoration: Invert the other half of the water storage tank onto the top of the wooden strips to serve as the roof. Paint the wooden strips with white waterproof paint to enhance aesthetics and prevent corrosion.
  3. Drainage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the tank to install a drain pipe, forming a floor drain. Drill a hole on the side to connect a direct joint and attach a plastic bucket externally as a small water storage device for collecting wastewater.

III. Sanitary Facility Configuration

  1. Toilet Installation: Place the toilet on the drain pipe opening, install the water tank, and secure it with glass glue to ensure a tight seal. Connect the other end of the drain pipe to a sewage bucket to prevent sewage overflow.
  2. Shower Function Expansion: Use a water pipe to make a simple shower heater. Install a three-way joint below the water inlet pipe and connect a showerhead. Extend the three-way joint of the outlet pipe horizontally to the doorway to serve as the water inlet pipe for a sink, integrating shower and washing functions.
  3. Door and Joint Completion: Use foam strips to拼接 (here, 'splice' or 'assemble' would be a better English equivalent; since '拼接' is directly translated, we use 'assemble' in the context) discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a door. Drill holes in the door to install hose joints, connecting to external water sources or drainage systems to ensure convenience of use.

Precautions: Wear protective gear during the manufacturing process to avoid risks associated with angle grinder operation. Seal all joints with glass glue to prevent water leakage. Regularly clean the sewage bucket to maintain a hygienic environment. This method is suitable for temporary or emergency scenarios. For long-term use, consider more professional sewage treatment solutions.
