How to Make a Rural Mobile Toilet
Admin October 07, 2026
A rural mobile toilet can be homemade using one of the following three methods, depending on the materials and requirements:

I. Using a Water Storage Barrel (Comprehensive Functionality, Suitable for Family Use)
Basic Structure Construction
- Use an angle grinder to split the water storage barrel in half along the central axis, retaining the complete barrel body as the main structure.
- Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board, and fix it to the upper side of the barrel with wooden strips and self-tapping screws to form a movable base and increase the height (recommended height: 40-50cm).
- Cut an opening on the side of the barrel, construct a door frame with sponge strips, embed plastic soft panels to form an elevated wall, and invert the upper half of the barrel onto the top of the wooden strips as the roof to create an enclosed space.
Functional Module Installation
- Drainage System: Drill a hole at the bottom of the barrel to install a drain pipe (diameter: 5-8cm), and drill a hole on the side to connect a plastic barrel as a water storage device, forming a simple septic tank.
- Sanitary Facilities: Place a toilet and install a water tank, securing the gaps with glass glue; connect a water pipe-modified bath heater, and install a three-way connector below the inlet pipe to connect a showerhead.
- Handwashing Area: Extend the outlet pipe's three-way connector horizontally to the doorway as the inlet pipe for a handwashing basin, install connectors and hoses, and drill a hole in the door to fix the faucet.
- Detail Optimization: Paint the wooden strips with white waterproof paint to enhance aesthetics,拼接 (assemble) foam strips with discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a simple door, and treat the door frame edges with sealant to prevent leaks.
II. Using a Water Storage Tank and Pallet (Simple and Movable, Suitable for Temporary Use)
Movable Base Construction
- Select a plastic pallet as the base platform, and fix universal wheels (diameter: 10-15cm) at the four corners of the bottom to ensure a load-bearing capacity of ≥50kg.
- Lay anti-slip mats or wooden boards on the surface of the pallet to increase stability during use.
Functional Expansion Suggestions
- A portable toilet or plastic barrel can be directly placed as an excretion container, with a waterproof cloth or plastic board added on top as a cover.
- Regular cleaning of excreta is required, making it suitable for short-term activities or temporary venues.
III. Using Two Chemical Barrels (Double-Barrel Structure, Suitable for Long-Term Use)
Main Structure Assembly
- Select two large chemical barrels (capacity: ≥200L), remove the top reinforcement bars, and completely cut off the barrel lids with a cutting machine.
- Invert and stack the two barrels, fix the upper and lower layers with an iron frame, leaving a 10-15cm gap in the middle for pipe installation.
Functional System Integration
- Door Frame and Sealing: Cut an opening on one side for the door frame size, drill a corresponding hole in the internal barrel body, and fix the gaps with rectangular iron sheet screws.
- Sewage System: Drill a hole in the corner to install a PVC pipe (diameter: 10cm), apply sealant to prevent leaks, cut off the excess pipe body, and connect it to the toilet water tank.
- Shower and Handwashing: Make a showerhead with a PVC pipe and connect it to the inlet pipe, extend the pipe to the doorway to install a handwashing basin; install two wooden doors with handles using hinges.
- Drainage Treatment: Lay the water pipe flat to the bottom of the barrel, test the functionality, and then connect it to a septic tank or water storage barrel for regular cleaning of sediments.
Precautions:
- Wear protective gear (goggles, gloves) during cutting operations to avoid splashing of plastic debris.
- All pipe connections must be sealed with sealant to prevent leaks and odor diffusion.
- The mobile toilet should be placed on a flat surface to avoid uneven stress on the universal wheels leading to tipping.
