How to Make a Portable Toilet by Yourself

Admin October 16, 2026

You can choose the following methods to make a portable toilet based on your needs and materials:

Making a Basic Portable Toilet Using a Water Storage Tank

  1. Structural Modification: Use an angle grinder to split the water storage tank vertically in half, creating two semi-tanks. Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board for easy mobility. Secure the wooden board to the upper edge of the tank with wooden strips and self-tapping screws, increasing the height to a size suitable for adults (about 1.8-2 meters).
  2. Walls and Roof: Cut an entrance on the side of the water storage tank, install sponge strips to form a door frame, and embed transparent plastic soft panels as walls, ensuring the height covers below the roof. Invert the upper half of the split water storage tank onto the top of the wooden strips as the roof, ensuring tightness.
  3. Waterproofing and Drainage: Cut a hole at the bottom of the tank and install a drain pipe to form a floor drain. Drill holes on the side and bottom of the plastic tank, install direct connectors, and place the plastic tank over the roof as a small water storage device (for collecting rainwater or flushing water). Use a water pipe to make a simple bathroom heater (optional), install a tee connector below the inlet pipe, and connect a showerhead.
  4. Sanitary Facility Installation: Place the toilet and secure the water tank (seal the connector with glass glue), connecting the drain pipe to the sewage tank. Connect a water pipe horizontally to the tee connector of the outlet pipe, extending it to the entrance as the inlet pipe for the sink. Finally, drill a hole in the door to install a connector, and apply waterproof paint overall to enhance aesthetics and durability.

Making Emergency Portable Toilets Using Common Items

  1. Emergency Solutions for Urination:
    • Diaper Filling Method: Take out the cotton and absorbent particles from diapers and stuff them into a sealed plastic bag, utilizing high absorbency to quickly absorb urine and prevent leakage, costing about 1 yuan.
    • Direct Use of Ready-made Products: Purchase children's dedicated portable toilets (costing about 4 yuan each), suitable for short-term emergency use.
  2. Emergency Solutions for Defecation:
    • Large Plastic Bag Method: Lay a large garbage bag in a vehicle or fixed container, seal and discard after defecation, noting to clean up promptly.
    • Cardboard Box Combination Method: Use a small cardboard box with a plastic bag at the bottom to build a simple enclosure structure, protecting privacy and facilitating cleaning, suitable for temporary scenarios.
  3. Enhancing Absorbency Tips: Add superabsorbent polymers (such as those found in sanitary napkins or diapers) to the sealed plastic bag. When exposed to water, the outer packaging melts, quickly solidifying excrement, reducing odors and leakage risks.
  4. Precautions: Seal the plastic bag after use and discard it promptly to avoid long-term storage; ensure the cardboard structure is firmly fixed to prevent tipping over; keep superabsorbent polymers away from children to prevent ingestion.

Key Tips: The water storage tank method is suitable for long-term use but requires some DIY skills; emergency solutions are suitable for temporary scenarios, with easily obtainable materials but lower comfort. Ensure the structure is sturdy, well-sealed, and comply with hygiene standards during construction.
