How to Make a Portable Toilet by Yourself
A homemade portable toilet can be assembled using a water storage tank or barrel as the main structure, combined with accessories such as a pallet and universal wheels, ensuring that the structure is stable and easy to move.

1. Selection of Main Structure
Water storage tanks or barrels are the core materials for a homemade portable toilet, with their sealing and load-bearing capabilities meeting basic needs. For example, a plastic water storage barrel with a diameter of about 60-80 centimeters (capacity of 200-300 liters) can provide sufficient internal space while being moderately weighted for easy movement. If a larger capacity is required, a metal water storage tank can be chosen, but attention should be paid to rust prevention.
2. Installation of Mobile Components
The combination of a pallet and universal wheels is key to achieving mobility. A wooden or plastic pallet with a thickness of ≥2 centimeters should be selected as the bottom support to ensure even load distribution. Fixing universal wheels (with brake function) with a diameter of ≥10 centimeters at the four corners of the pallet bottom can enhance mobility flexibility and stability. For example, in one case, a young man used a plastic pallet paired with universal wheels, allowing the water storage barrel to be easily pushed to different locations.
3. Internal Functional Design
- Waste Disposal: If a direct-discharge design is adopted, a drainage outlet should be reserved at the bottom of the water storage barrel and connected with a hose for easy cleaning; if a closed design is chosen, chemical degradants or biodegradable bags can be placed inside the barrel to reduce odors.
- Toilet Comfort: A detachable toilet seat (made of plastic or wood, for example) should be installed above the barrel opening, with a recommended height of 40-45 centimeters, conforming to ergonomic principles.
- Privacy Protection: A simple barrier can be made around the water storage barrel using waterproof cloth or canvas, fixed with Velcro or hooks, ensuring ventilation while enhancing privacy.
4. Safety and Stability Optimization
- Structural Reinforcement: Rubber pads should be laid on the contact surface between the water storage barrel and the pallet to increase friction and prevent slipping; if a metal barrel is used, L-shaped angle irons should be installed at the four corners of the pallet for fixation.
- Center of Gravity Control: Heavy objects (such as sandbags) should be placed at the front end of the pallet to balance the weight at the rear of the water storage barrel, preventing tipping during movement.
- Anti-slip Treatment: Anti-slip tape should be wrapped around the surface of the universal wheels to enhance grip on slippery surfaces.
Currently, specific construction drawings have not been made public. It is recommended to refer to similar cases on DIY platforms (such as Bilibili and Xiaohongshu) and adjust dimensions and materials according to personal needs. Before construction, the load-bearing and mobility performance of each component should be tested to ensure safety during use.
