How to Make a Portable Toilet
Admin September 21, 2026
You can choose different plans to make a portable toilet according to your needs and materials. Here are the specific methods:

I. Plan Using Water Storage Tanks and a Pallet
- Basic Frame Construction: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of the pallet to ensure mobility. Place a water storage tank and cut the top to form an open tank, which serves as the main water storage or sewage container.
- Structural Reinforcement and Opening: Stack two water storage tanks with open tops upside down and fix the outer frame with self-tapping screws to enhance stability. Cut a rectangular opening as the doorway and drill a hole in the interior floor to install a drain elbow and a water pipe to ensure the smooth discharge of excrement.
- Functional Device Installation: Install and fix the toilet, connect the water tank and the water inlet pipe to achieve the flushing function. Install a faucet, a washbasin, and a showerhead to meet basic cleaning needs. Fix a wooden board as a door and install a door handle to ensure privacy.
II. Plan Using Chemical Barrels
- Material Preprocessing: Find two large chemical barrels, remove the internal steel bars and cut off the lids to ensure the interior space is usable. Place the two plastic barrels upside down together and fix the upper and lower iron frames to form a stable structure.
- Opening and Sealing: Cut an opening the size of a door frame, and also cut the interior plastic barrel accordingly to facilitate personnel access. Use a rectangular iron sheet to fix the gap between the two plastic barrels to prevent leakage. Drill a hole in the corner of the plastic barrel, install a PVC pipe, apply sealant, and cut off the excess part to ensure smooth drainage.
- Functional Improvement: Place the toilet and install the water tank, connect the water inlet pipe and the washbasin to achieve the flushing and cleaning functions. Use a PVC pipe to make a showerhead and connect it to the water pipe to meet shower needs. Install two wooden doors and handles, extend and connect the water inlet pipe, test all functions, and connect the drainage outlet to the septic tank to ensure environmentally friendly treatment.
III. Simple Emergency Plans
- Emergency Urination Solutions:
- Diaper Filling Method: Take out some cotton and water-absorbent particles from a diaper and put them into a sealed plastic bag. Use the water-absorbing property to handle urine.
- Direct Use of Ready-made Products: Purchase a portable toilet designed specifically for children, which is convenient and quick.
- Emergency Defecation Solutions:
- Large Plastic Bag Method: Use a large plastic bag to lay it in a vehicle or a fixed container. Seal and discard it after defecation to avoid pollution.
- Cardboard Box Combination Method: Place a plastic bag at the bottom of a small cardboard box to form a simple enclosure structure for temporary use.
- Enhanced Water Absorption: Add a small packet of superabsorbent polymer to the sealed plastic bag. When it comes into contact with water, the outer packaging will automatically melt, and it can quickly solidify the excrement, reducing odors and the risk of leakage.
