How to Make a Portable Toilet
Admin September 21, 2026
A portable toilet can be made through the modification of a water storage barrel, the combination of a water storage tank and a pallet, or a simple emergency solution. The specific methods are as follows:

I. Water Storage Barrel Modification Plan
Basic Structure Construction
- Use an angle grinder to split the water storage barrel lengthwise along the central axis, creating two half-barrel structures. Install universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board to ensure mobility.
- Reinforce the upper side of the barrel with wooden strips and self-tapping screws to form a stable frame, and cut out a doorway on the side at a height suitable for adults.
Wall and Roof Installation
- Attach sponge strips along the edge of the doorway as a sealing buffer, and embed transparent plastic soft panels to form the walls. The upper half of the barrel serves as an inclined roof, ensuring waterproofing.
- Drill a hole in the center of the barrel's bottom to install a drain pipe connected to an external sewage bucket. Drill a hole on the side for connecting the water tank's inlet, and use sealant to treat the connections to prevent leakage.
Sanitary Facility Configuration
- Install a simple shower (optional) made from modified water pipes. The toilet can be designed with a plastic bucket and a lid, with the water tank controlling the flush volume through a float valve. The drain pipe should seamlessly connect to the floor drain system.
II. Water Storage Tank and Pallet Combination Plan
Mobile Chassis Construction
- Fix universal wheels with brakes at the four corners of a plastic pallet. The pallet size should be larger than the base area of the water storage tank to provide stable support.
Water Storage Tank Modification
- Use an angle grinder to cut along the marked line on the top of the water storage tank, forming an open tank. Stack two open tanks and secure them with self-tapping screws, cutting out a rectangular doorway of 80cm×60cm on the side.
Internal System Installation
- Drill a hole in the floor of the tank, install a 50mm drain elbow connected to PVC pipes, and secure the toilet while using glass glue to seal the connections.
- Install a stainless steel basin as a sink, equipped with a faucet and a 10L water tank. The showerhead is connected to the hot water pipe through a three-way valve (requiring an external hot water source).
Door and Sealing Treatment
- Make a door panel from a 10mm thick wooden board, install hinges and locks, and attach sealing strips along the door缝隙 (door gap). Wrap all water pipe connections with Teflon tape to prevent odor leakage.
III. Simple Emergency Solution
Urine Disposal
- Remove the superabsorbent polymer (SAP) from diapers, mix it with cotton, and place it in a sealed plastic bag, which can absorb 500ml of urine and solidify into a gel.
- Commercial children's portable toilets (priced around 4 yuan) use degradable bags that can be directly placed over the toilet seat, suitable for short-term emergencies.
Feces Disposal
- Use a plastic bucket of over 50L as a container, line it with double-layer garbage bags, and tie the bag tightly after defecation, then spray with deodorant.
- Build a temporary enclosure (height 1.2m) with corrugated cardboard, and attach waterproof tape at the bottom to prevent leakage.
Enhanced Absorbent Materials
- Add SAP particles (about 20g) from sanitary napkins to the plastic bag, which can solidify excrement within 30 seconds upon contact with water, facilitating sealed disposal.
Precautions: Wear goggles and cut-resistant gloves for all cutting operations; regularly disinfect for long-term use (recommended twice a week); clean and spray the sewage bucket with chlorine-based disinfectant daily.
