How to Make a Home Portable Toilet
Admin October 12, 2026
A home portable toilet can be made using a water storage tank. Here are the specific steps:

Basic Frame Construction
- Water Storage Tank Processing: Use an angle grinder to split the water storage tank vertically along the middle, creating two symmetrical half-tank structures. Choose a corrosion-resistant plastic water storage tank (such as PE material) and ensure its capacity meets daily usage needs.
- Mobile Device Installation: Fix universal wheels at each of the four corners of a wooden board. The wheels should have locking functions to enhance stability. The size of the wooden board should be slightly larger than the diameter of the bottom of the water storage tank to form a load-bearing platform.
- Height Adjustment Structure: Take four wooden strips about 30cm long and vertically fix them to the upper edge of the water storage tank with self-tapping screws to form a frame support. The spacing between the wooden strips should be even to ensure the subsequent wall installation is stable.
Wall and Roof Construction
- Door Frame Making: Use an angle grinder to cut a rectangular doorway 60cm long and 40cm high on the side of the water storage tank. Attach 5cm-wide sponge strips on both sides to form a sealed structure. The sponge strips should be of high-density material to enhance sound insulation.
- Wall Installation: Cut transparent plastic soft boards to the appropriate size and insert them into the gaps between the wooden strips to form raised walls. The thickness of the soft boards is recommended to be ≥2mm, and the edges should be sealed with waterproof tape.
- Roof Covering: Invert the upper half of the water storage tank and place it on top of the wooden strips as the roof. Seal the edges where the roof contacts the walls with glass glue. The roof slope is recommended to be ≥15° for easy drainage.
Functional System Integration
- Drainage System: Drill a hole with a diameter of 5cm at the center of the bottom of the tank and install a PVC drainage pipe to form a floor drain. The drainage pipe should be connected to a U-shaped trap to prevent odor backflow.
- Water Storage Device: Drill holes on the side and bottom of a plastic bucket and install direct connectors. Place the plastic bucket on the roof to form a high-level water storage tank. The capacity of the water storage tank is recommended to be ≥50L to meet single flushing needs.
- Bathing Components: Make a simple bath heater bracket with water pipes. Install a three-way connector below the water inlet pipe, with one end connected to a showerhead and the other end extending to the doorway as the water inlet pipe for a washbasin. The height of the showerhead is recommended to be 1.8m from the ground.
Terminal Device Installation
- Toilet Fixing: Place a finished toilet above the drainage pipe hole, install a water tank, and seal the connection with glass glue. The toilet's sewage outlet and the drainage pipe should be aligned, with a deviation ≤5mm.
- Washbasin Configuration: Drill a hole on the side wall of the doorway and install a faucet connector. Connect a hose to a simple washbasin. The washbasin is recommended to be made of lightweight plastic material with a capacity ≥3L.
- Sewage Disposal: Connect the end of the drainage pipe to a sealed sewage bucket and place deodorizers inside the bucket. The sewage bucket should be cleaned regularly, and it is recommended to replace it every 3 days.
Appearance Optimization
- Surface Protection: Paint all wooden structures with two coats of white waterproof paint. The paint film thickness should be ≥50μm to enhance weather resistance.
- Door Making: Use foam strips to拼接 (Note: '拼接' here means 'piece together' or 'assemble'. In English, it can be translated as 'assemble') discarded honeycomb wooden boards to make a door panel and cover it with waterproof cloth. The door hinge installation should ensure smooth opening and closing, with a gap ≤3mm.
