How to Drill Holes in Container Houses

Admin September 17, 2026

Drilling holes in container houses requires following standardized procedures. The specific methods are as follows:

I. Preparation

  1. Material Inspection: Before drilling, carefully inspect the container material to confirm the absence of cracks, deformation, or rust, preventing drilling failures or structural damage due to material defects.
  2. Tool Selection: Choose tools based on the hole size and material:
    • Small holes (e.g., diameter < 10 cm): Use an electric drill with a metal hole saw.
    • Medium holes (e.g., diameter 10-50 cm): Use an angle grinder or plasma cutter.
    • Large holes (e.g., diameter > 50 cm): Require oxy-acetylene cutting equipment.
    • Precision holes (e.g., complex patterns): Prefer laser cutting or waterjet cutting.
Also, prepare protective gear such as goggles, gloves, and dust masks to ensure operational safety.

II. Marking and Positioning

  1. Design Planning: Determine hole locations based on actual needs (e.g., ventilation, pipe insertion), choosing uniform or specific pattern distributions while avoiding container load-bearing structures.
  2. Marking Methods:
    • Use an indelible marker to mark the container surface.
    • Right-angle partitions: Use a square and chalk lines for positioning.
    • Beveled partitions: Draw lines according to the bevel angle to ensure accurate hole placement.

III. Drilling Operations

  1. Floor Drilling:
    • Adopt the π-type fixing method, aligning floor joints with the π-beam centerline, marking with chalk lines, and securing with ST4238 cross-recessed flat-head self-tapping screws at intervals of 300-350 mm.
  2. Partition Drilling:
    • Pre-drilling: First, use a small-diameter drill bit (slightly smaller than the target hole) to buffer pressure and reduce cracks.
    • Drill Bit Selection: Use tungsten steel drill bits for ordinary partitions and high-speed steel drill bits for hardened steel plates.
    • Operation Monitoring: Continuously observe the drilling direction for deviations and control the drill temperature, pausing if overheated.

IV. Precautions

  1. Perpendicularity: The drill bit must be perpendicular to the partition surface to avoid hole deformation or drill bit wear.
  2. Speed and Pressure: Maintain moderate speed and pressure; excessive speed can break the drill bit, while insufficient speed can cause surface scratches.
  3. Surface Cleaning: Before drilling, wipe the partition with a damp cloth to remove rust or dust, ensuring smooth operation.
  4. Avoid Welding/Cutting: After drilling partitions, avoid welding or cutting to prevent deformation or strength reduction.

V. Final Work

  1. Cleaning Debris: Use a small brush to sweep away iron filings, then thoroughly clean with a scraper or vacuum cleaner.
  2. Quality Inspection: Confirm that the hole diameter meets requirements and the hole wall is smooth; rework if necessary.
