How to Build a Portable Toilet by Yourself

Admin September 27, 2026

You can refer to the following methods for building a portable toilet by yourself, which mainly include the water storage tank modification method and the modular assembly method, while planning the functional layout according to actual needs:

I. Water Storage Tank Modification Method (Low-Cost DIY Solution)

  1. Basic Frame Construction
Select two discarded water storage tanks as the main structure. Install universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom of the pallet to achieve mobility. Use an angle grinder to cut off the top of the first water storage tank along the marked line to form an open tank. Treat the second tank in the same way and then invert and stack it. Fix the outer frame with self-tapping screws to form a closed space.

  2. Functional Partition Cutting
Cut a rectangular opening with a height of 180 cm and a width of 50 cm on the side of the tank as a doorway. Cut a circular hole with a diameter of 10 cm on the interior floor and insert a 45-degree elbow. Connect a drain pipe and seal the gaps with waterproof glue. Reserve a position on the top of the tank for installing a toilet water tank, and the inlet pipe of the water tank should be connected to an external water source or water storage device.

  3. Sanitary Equipment Installation

  • Toilet System: Place the toilet drain outlet against the reserved hole on the floor and fix the edges with glass glue to prevent leakage.
  • Handwashing Device: Drill a hole on the side of the tank to install a faucet. Fix a pipe cap with screws below as a drain outlet. Drill a hole on the pipe cap to install a stainless steel basin as a handwashing sink, and connect the bottom of the basin to a drain pipe.
  • Shower Function (Optional): Install a shower bracket on the top of the tank, connect a hose to the water outlet of the water tank, and install a spray-type showerhead on the wall.
  1. Door and Sealing Treatment
Make a door panel with wood and fix it to the tank frame with hinges. Stick sealing strips at the door gaps to prevent the spread of odors. The interior walls can be covered with waterproof membranes or painted with waterproof coatings to enhance durability.

II. Modular Assembly Method (Industrial Standard Solution)

  1. Component Preparation and Assembly
Purchase modular components such as special columns, wall panels, and roof panels for portable toilets, and assemble them step by step according to the instructions. Install anti-slip bases at the bottom of the columns. Connect the wall panels to the columns with buckles to ensure that each joint fits tightly.

  2. Functional System Integration

  • Sewage Disposal System: Pre-bury a septic tank or connect to the municipal sewage pipeline. Install a toilet (squat or sit) inside and connect it to the sewage pipe.
  • Water Supply System: Equip with a water tank or directly connect to tap water. Install a water pump to ensure stable water pressure.
  • Ventilation System: Install an exhaust fan on the top and open ventilation windows on the sides to form air convection.
  1. Appearance and Adaptability Adjustment
Design the appearance style according to the usage scenario (such as scenic spots or construction sites), and decorate with materials such as anti-corrosion wood or metal panels. Determine the number of toilet units according to the passenger flow. It is recommended that the size of a single room should be no less than 1.2 meters × 1.4 meters to ensure comfort.

III. Key Considerations

  • Compliance: It should comply with local environmental protection and building regulations, especially the sewage disposal should meet the standards.
  • Material Selection: Give priority to waterproof, anti-corrosion, and easy-to-clean materials, such as PVC panels and stainless steel.
  • Maintenance Convenience: Reserve inspection ports during design to facilitate regular cleaning of the septic tank or replacement of components.
