How to Build a Portable Toilet
Admin September 28, 2026
There are mainly two ways to build a portable toilet: using a water storage tank or drum, and using factory-prefabricated finished products.

Building with a Water Storage Tank or Drum
- Materials Needed: You will need a water storage tank or drum, universal wheels, wooden strips or pallets, self-tapping screws, an angle grinder, plastic soft panels, a toilet, a water tank, water pipes, a showerhead, etc. The water storage tank or drum serves as the core container for storing water and treating waste; universal wheels facilitate the mobility of the toilet; wooden strips or pallets are used to construct the frame; self-tapping screws are used to secure components; an angle grinder is used to cut materials; plastic soft panels can form the walls; and the toilet, water tank, water pipes, and showerhead are basic toilet facilities.
- Construction Steps:
- Cutting the Container: Use an angle grinder to split the water storage tank or drum in half or cut it into the desired shape, creating two halves or an open tank body to provide space for installing other components.
- Installing Universal Wheels: Fix universal wheels at the four corners of the wooden board or the bottom of the pallet to enable the toilet to move flexibly and adapt to different site requirements.
- Constructing the Frame: Secure wooden strips or use self-tapping screws on the upper side of the tank or drum to increase height and simultaneously construct the door frame and wall frame in preparation for installing the door and walls.
- Installing the Door and Walls: Open a doorway on the side of the tank or drum, install the door frame and door, and embed plastic soft panels between the wooden strips to form walls, providing privacy and protection.
- Installing the Roof: Place the upper half of the water storage tank or drum on top of the wooden strips to form a roof, preventing rainwater from entering.
- Installing Drainage and Sanitary Facilities: Drill a hole at the bottom of the tank or drum, install a drainage pipe to form a floor drain, and connect the toilet and water tank to ensure the smooth discharge and treatment of waste. Also, install water pipes, a showerhead, and other facilities to meet the needs of bathing and hand washing.
Building with Factory-Prefabricated Finished Products
- Materials Needed: Factory-prefabricated mobile toilet frames, wall materials (such as color-coated steel sheets, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, etc.), toilets, water tanks, etc. The factory-prefabricated frames ensure the structural stability of the toilet; wall materials like color-coated steel sheets and fiberglass-reinforced plastics have advantages such as water resistance, corrosion resistance, and easy cleaning; and toilets and water tanks are basic sanitary facilities.
- Construction Steps:
- Transporting the Frame: Transport the prefabricated mobile toilet frame to the construction site, ensuring that the frame is not damaged during transportation.
- Installing the Walls: Install the wall materials on the frame to form the walls of the toilet, providing installation space and protection for internal facilities.
- Installing Internal Facilities: Install the toilet, water tank, and other internal facilities, and connect the water pipes and drainage pipes to ensure the normal functioning of the toilet's basic functions.
- Debugging and Inspection: Conduct necessary debugging and inspections, such as checking for water leaks in the pipes and whether the toilet flushes smoothly, to ensure that the toilet can be used normally.
