How to Build a Portable Toilet
Admin September 24, 2026
Building a portable toilet can be achieved through the following two methods, with specific steps outlined below:

Method 1: Using a Water Storage Barrel to Create a Portable Restroom
Basic Frame Construction
- Split a water storage barrel in half lengthwise using an angle grinder to form two semi-circular barrel sections. Fix universal wheels at the four corners of a wooden board to ensure overall mobility.
- Secure horizontal support structures on the upper side of the barrel using wooden strips and self-tapping screws, increasing the height to accommodate human use. Cut an entrance on the side of the barrel and install a sponge strip to form a door frame, enhancing sealing.
Wall and Roof Installation
- Insert plastic soft panels as elevated walls, ensuring the material is waterproof and easy to clean. Invert the upper half of the barrel onto the top of the wooden strips as a roof, and apply white waterproof paint to the surface for both aesthetics and extended service life.
Drainage and Water Storage System
- Drill a hole at the bottom of the barrel to install a drain pipe, forming a floor drain structure. Drill a hole on the side to connect a direct fitting, and drill another hole at the bottom to install a direct fitting and place a plastic bucket over it, creating a small water storage device for collecting wastewater.
Sanitary Facility Integration
- Install a simple bathroom heater modified from a water pipe (circuit planning required in advance). Install a three-way fitting below the inlet pipe, with one end connected to a showerhead and the other end extending to the toilet tank.
- Place the toilet and secure the tank, sealing the edges with glass glue to prevent leakage. Connect the end of the drain pipe to a sewage bucket to ensure centralized disposal of waste.
- Extend a water pipe horizontally from the three-way fitting of the outlet pipe to the door, install a sink inlet pipe, fitting, and hose, and drill a hole in the corresponding position on the door to install a faucet fitting.
Method 2: Using a Water Storage Tank and Pallet to Create a Portable Restroom
Mobile Chassis Construction
- Prepare a plastic pallet as the base platform and fix universal wheels at the four corners of the bottom (choose a model with matching load-bearing capacity).
- If the water storage tank is large, install a wooden or metal support frame in the center of the pallet to enhance structural stability.
Water Storage Tank Adaptation and Function Expansion
- Cut an opening in the pallet according to the shape of the water storage tank to ensure stable embedding of the tank. If the tank is tall, install steps or handrails to enhance safety.
- Drill a hole on the side of the tank to install a drain valve and connect a hose to an external water storage bag or directly into a sewer. If recycled water is needed, install a small water pump and filtration device.
Simple Sanitary Facility Configuration
- Place a portable toilet or dig a cesspit (use with biodegradable bags), and cover the top to prevent odor diffusion.
- Install a foldable sink, with water discharged by a foot pump or manual pressing, directly into the water storage tank or an independent collection container.
Precautions
- Plan dimensions before construction to ensure reasonable spatial layout of components.
- Wear protective gear during all cutting operations to avoid cuts or inhalation of dust.
- It is recommended that circuit installation be carried out by professionals to prevent electrical leakage risks.
- Regularly clean the sewage bucket and water storage device to maintain a hygienic environment.
