How to Build a Kang in a Container House

Admin September 17, 2026

Building a kang in a container house requires consideration of material selection, structural design, operational steps, and safety measures. Here are the specific methods:

Material Selection

The core structure of a kang needs to balance heat preservation and heat dissipation functions. It is recommended to use fire-resistant bricks as the base material, as their high-temperature resistance ensures long-term durability without easy damage. The insulation layer should be paired with insulation cotton to enhance thermal insulation and reduce heat loss. Although container houses have a certain load-bearing capacity, their interiors need reinforcement to support the weight of the kang. Metal brackets can be used to reinforce the internal structure, ensuring overall stability.

Structural Design

  1. Layout Design: Given the limited space in a container, the layout of the kang should efficiently utilize corner spaces. An L-shaped or U-shaped design is recommended, which can meet heating needs while preserving activity areas.
  2. Flue Design: The flue should extend vertically upwards, with an anti-backflow device (such as a one-way valve) installed at the top to prevent smoke from being forced back by strong winds. The flue diameter should be no less than 15 centimeters to ensure smooth smoke exhaust and prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  3. Heat Dissipation Optimization: The surface of the kang should be paved with stone slabs or tiles, which have better thermal conductivity than wood and can evenly distribute heat, improving heating efficiency.

Steps for Building a Kang

  1. Prepare Tools and Materials: Choose a sturdy and well-ventilated stove. The fuel should mainly be wood or charcoal, avoiding materials that easily produce harmful gases (such as plastic).
  2. Construct the Kang Surface: Build the kang body with fire-resistant bricks, leaving a combustion chamber inside to ensure good ventilation. The kang surface should be flat, with gaps filled with fire-resistant mud to prevent fire leakage.
  3. Ignite the Stove Fire: Place the fuel in the combustion chamber and ignite it from the bottom. Keep the fire small initially and gradually increase it after the fuel is fully burned.
  4. Adjust the Temperature: Control the fire intensity by increasing or decreasing the fuel amount or adjusting the opening degree of the ventilation openings. For example, fully opening the ventilation openings enhances combustion, while partially opening them reduces the temperature.

Safety Precautions

  1. Reserve Heat Dissipation Space: Maintain a safety distance of at least 50 centimeters around the kang, keeping it away from flammable items (such as curtains and furniture) to prevent high-temperature ignition.
  2. Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Check the flue for soot buildup monthly and clean any blockages. Inspect the insulation layer for damage and repair it promptly to avoid heat loss.
  3. Ensure Ventilation: Install convection ventilation openings in the container (such as one at the top and one at the bottom) to ensure air circulation and prevent excessive carbon monoxide concentration.
  4. Install Alarm Devices: It is recommended to equip the container with a carbon monoxide alarm to monitor gas concentration in real-time and automatically alarm when it exceeds the standard.

Through scientific design and standardized operation, the kang in a container house can achieve safe and efficient heating functions. At the same time, it is necessary to strictly comply with safety regulations to reduce the risks of fire and poisoning.
