How to Build a Container House
Admin September 15, 2026
Building a container house involves steps such as selection, ground preparation, hoisting and positioning, structural connection, interior decoration, and post-maintenance. Details are as follows:

I. Selection Stage Select the structural type according to needs:
- Welded integral container: It is welded into shape as a whole in the factory, with a direct force path and strong resistance to deformation, suitable for frequent hoisting and movement.
- Bolted assembled container: It is connected by standard plates through bolts. Check the wall thickness of the steel columns and bottom beams (common specifications range from 1.5 mm to 3 mm). The thicker the wall thickness, the greater the load-bearing redundancy. In addition, pay attention to the coating process on the container surface. Hot-dip galvanizing has a longer anti-corrosion lifespan than cold-dip galvanizing, especially in areas with large temperature differences between day and night and significant humidity changes, where the coating quality directly affects the rusting speed of the container.
II. Ground Preparation Provide a uniform load-bearing foundation for the container house:
- Clear the floating soil and debris on the ground and compact the original soil layer.
- For long-term fixed use, pour a concrete strip foundation. The recommended width is 30 cm to 50 cm, and the depth is determined according to the thickness of the local frozen soil layer. The levelness error of the foundation top surface should not exceed 5 mm.
- For short-term use, precast concrete pads or steel pads can be used. The pad spacing should not exceed 2 m, and a crushed stone leveling layer should be laid below.
III. Hoisting and Positioning Precisely control the contact state between the container and the foundation:
- Use steel wire ropes with sufficient load-bearing capacity to ensure that all lifting points are under synchronous force, avoiding unilateral force that may cause container distortion.
- After the container is in place, check the fit between the bottom beam and the foundation pad. If there is local suspension, pad it with thin steel sheets. The levelness error should be controlled within 2 mm per meter.
IV. Structural Connection and Interior Decoration
- When connecting multiple containers, fix them with bolts through angle steel gusset plates. The node connections should be subject to anti-seismic and anti-loosening treatment.
- Install insulation layers and vapor barriers inside and design proper ventilation to avoid condensation.
- Install doors, windows, electrical, and water supply and drainage systems. Metal plates or calcium silicate boards can be used for walls and ceilings, and cement fiber boards or steel-wood composite floors can be used for floors.
V. Post-Maintenance
- Rust prevention and anti-corrosion: Check welds, corners, and other parts every year. If rust spots are found, grind and repaint them immediately. Repaint every 8-12 years in inland dry areas, every 7-10 years in southern humid areas, and every 3-5 years in coastal areas.
- Waterproof sealing: Replace the sealant around doors and windows and at container joints every 5-7 years.
- Condensation prevention: Ensure that the insulation layers and vapor barriers are intact and avoid using bare steel plates directly as interior walls.
