How to Apply Sealant on Container House Roof
Admin September 17, 2026
Applying sealant on a container house roof requires following a three-step core process: preparation, operation, and finishing. Here are the specific steps:

I. Preliminary Preparation
Material and Tool Selection
- Sealant Type: Prioritize using silicone weather-resistant sealant, which offers excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and extreme temperatures, making it suitable for outdoor environments. If the roof needs to withstand vibrations (such as in transportation or high-wind areas), choose polyurethane sealant, which has strong elasticity and better tear resistance.
- Tool List: Prepare a caulking gun, utility knife, cleaning cloth, sandpaper (120-240 grit), and masking tape (for protecting non-caulking areas).
Base Treatment
- Cleaning and Sanding: Thoroughly sand the rust, oil stains, and loose coatings from the gaps to ensure a rough surface that facilitates sealant adhesion. If dust remains after wiping, use compressed air or a dry cloth for secondary cleaning.
- Drying Treatment: If the gaps are damp, use a hot air blower to dry them or let them air-dry completely to prevent the sealant from being affected by moisture during curing.
II. Caulking Operation
Caulking Gun Preparation
- Nozzle Cutting: Cut the nozzle into a bevel according to the gap width (usually 3-5mm) to ensure the sealant flow matches the gap. After loading the caulking gun, press out a small amount of sealant (about 5cm) to check for uniform flow and eliminate air bubbles or interruptions.
Caulking Techniques
- Angle and Speed: Hold the caulking gun at a 45° angle to the gap and start moving uniformly from the corner or joint (recommended speed: 5cm/second) to avoid uneven sealant application due to pauses. Keep your wrist stable while moving to ensure consistent sealant thickness.
- Wide Gap Handling: If the gap width exceeds 8mm, fill it in two stages: first fill to 80% depth, wait 30 minutes for initial curing, and then fill the remaining space to prevent sealant shrinkage and cracking.
III. Finishing Treatment
- Curing Wait: The drying time of the sealant depends on the type (silicone sealant takes about 24-48 hours, polyurethane sealant takes about 12-24 hours) and environmental temperature and humidity (the curing speed doubles for every 10°C increase in temperature). Extend the drying time in low-temperature or humid environments.
- Quality Inspection: After drying, test with water spraying to observe whether the repaired area leaks. If local delamination or air bubbles are found, remove and reapply the sealant.
Precautions: Wear protective gloves and a mask during operation to avoid contact with the sealant on the skin or inhalation of fumes. If the roof leakage is severe or the area exceeds 1㎡, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling to ensure structural safety.
