House Crack and Prefabricated Slab Fall

Admin September 18, 2026

The fall of a prefabricated slab due to a house crack is a serious safety accident that may occur, and it is necessary to pay high attention to the crack situation and take correct measures.

Accident Case and Causes

On April 11, 2024, a prefabricated slab fracture accident occurred in a mahjong parlor in Fengshouchang, Guanba Town, Zhong County, Chongqing, resulting in 2 deaths and 3 injuries. After on-site investigation by experts, it was initially determined that the cause of the accident was that the temporary load accumulated on the second-floor slab was too large, exceeding the bearing capacity of the prefabricated slab, leading to brittle fracture and fall of the slab. This case shows that when the load borne by the prefabricated slab exceeds its designed bearing capacity, fracture and fall may occur, leading to serious consequences.

Relationship between Cracks and the Fall of Prefabricated Slabs

Cracks do not necessarily lead to the collapse of prefabricated slabs. The key lies in the width, location, and changes of the cracks. If a crack exceeds 1 millimeter, it may indicate a certain degree of structural damage, requiring vigilance. Especially when cracks appear in key support positions such as load-bearing walls and large beams, which are crucial for the structural integrity of the house, the appearance of cracks may seriously affect the overall stability of the structure and must be given special attention.

Hazards of Incorrect Responses

In real life, there are some incorrect response methods that can exacerbate the danger. For example, a household in Chongqing, upon discovering that the cracks were getting larger, not only did not take correct handling measures but also piled heavy objects on top, resulting in the entire slab falling and causing a tragedy. This approach is highly undesirable. When cracks have already appeared and there may be potential safety hazards, continuing to increase the load will further increase the burden on the prefabricated slab, accelerate its damage process, and greatly increase the risk of an accident.

Response Recommendations

When cracks are found in a house, professional structural engineers or relevant departments should be contacted in a timely manner for inspection and assessment to determine the nature and severity of the cracks and whether they pose a threat to the structural safety of the house. Based on the assessment results, corresponding repair or reinforcement measures should be taken to ensure the safety and stability of the house structure.
