Homemade Simple Portable Toilet

Admin October 11, 2026

Homemade simple portable toilets can be achieved through the following methods, and the appropriate plan should be selected based on the usage scenario and material conditions:

1. Mobile toilet made from a repurposed water storage tank This plan uses a discarded water storage tank as the main structure and achieves mobility and usability through structural modifications. First, the water storage tank is split longitudinally along its central axis, with the bottom retained as a sewage container and the top as a roof. An entrance is cut on the side of the tank and a door frame is installed. Inside, simple walls are built using wooden or plastic boards to ensure privacy. A drainage pipe needs to be installed at the bottom of the tank, connected to an external sewage bag or directly to the sewer system. To enhance mobility, universal wheels can be added to the four corners of the tank bottom, and the tank height can be increased using wooden strips or metal brackets to facilitate the installation of a toilet seat or squat pan. If additional functions are required, solar panels can be laid on the top of the tank and connected to small lighting devices or ventilation systems to form a solar-powered mobile toilet.

2. Simple bucket-style toilet This plan is characterized by low cost and easy operation, suitable for temporary or emergency scenarios. A plastic bucket with a capacity of 10-20 liters and a lid is selected as the core container. Double-layer garbage bags are laid inside as liners to prevent direct contact between waste and the bucket wall. At the bottom of the bucket, 5-10 centimeters of cat litter or wood shavings are laid to reduce the diffusion of liquid odors through adsorption. The garbage bags need to be replaced regularly during use, and disinfectant wipes can be attached to the inside of the bucket lid for easy cleaning. If privacy protection is required, a lightweight tent or folding screen can be paired to form an independent usage space. This plan does not require complex tools, but timely cleaning is necessary to avoid odor accumulation.

3. Portable combined toilet For outdoor activities, a modular design can be adopted. The portable toilet consists of a foldable metal frame and a disposable sewage collection bag. The collection bag contains superabsorbent polymers that can quickly solidify liquids and reduce odors. When in use, the frame is unfolded, the collection bag is fixed, and it can be used as a toilet. After use, the bag opening is sealed and discarded. The tent-style toilet provides a private space through a lightweight tent, and a portable toilet or bucket-style device can be placed inside, suitable for crowded scenarios such as weddings and markets. These plans emphasize portability and rapid deployment, but the sewage collection bags or buckets need to be replaced or cleaned regularly.

Precautions:

  • Ventilation should be considered for all plans, which can be improved by reserving ventilation openings or installing small exhaust fans.
  • The structural stability of the mobile toilet made from a repurposed water storage tank should be ensured to avoid tipping due to a high center of gravity.
  • The cat litter or wood shavings in the simple bucket-style toilet should be replaced regularly, and it is recommended to clean them every 2-3 days.
  • The disposable sewage collection bags should be made of materials that meet environmental protection standards to avoid environmental pollution.
