Homemade Mobile Camping Toilet

Admin September 22, 2026

When making a homemade mobile camping toilet, you should choose a plan based on the camping scenario, with the core principles being environmental protection, hygiene, and portability. Here are the specific methods:

I. Lightweight Emergency Plan (Single-Day Hiking/Lightweight Camping)

  1. Privacy Barrier: Prioritize using the natural environment for遮挡 (shielding), such as dense bushes or rock piles. If there are no natural conditions, you can use the side cloth of a camping canopy, a portable windbreak, or dry grass and branches to temporarily create a 1-square-meter space to ensure no exposure risk during toilet use.
  2. Toilet Carrier: Use biodegradable sealed garbage bags or special portable toilet bags (containing absorbent coagulants that can solidify excrement and suppress odors). If there are no special bags, you can use an ordinary garbage bag lined with a plastic basin. After use, tie the bag tightly and take it away to avoid polluting the environment.
  3. Emergency Alternative: If equipment is limited, plan an area at least 50 meters away from water sources, the campsite, and trails in advance. Use a small shovel to dig a 15-20 cm deep pit. After using the toilet, cover the excrement with soil to reduce interference with the ecosystem.

II. Comfortable Advanced Plan (Multi-Person Overnight Camping)

  1. Dedicated Toilet Space: Use the single-person space of a camping canopy or an automatic tent as the toilet area. Hang a curtain and lay a moisture-proof mat to enhance comfort. If there are no extra tents, you can use a sunshade frame with waterproof cloth to build a temporary small shed, ensuring ventilation and rain protection.
  2. Fixed Toilet Device: Purchase a foldable portable toilet or use a large plastic box lined with thick garbage bags and sprinkle wood ash/deodorant (to absorb odors and assist in decomposition). After use, tie the garbage bag tightly and put it in a sealed storage box to take back to town for disposal, avoiding the growth of bacteria.
  3. Hygiene Accessories: Carry hand sanitizer gel and wet wipes to clean your hands. Prepare dry leaves or toilet paper as wiping materials to reduce dependence on natural resources.

III. Other Practical Experiences

  1. Toilet Tent Plan: Use a lightweight toilet tent (which folds up like a backpack) and place a foldable toilet or a portable toilet bag (containing coagulating powder to lock in odors) inside. When setting it up, choose a position downwind and 10 meters away from the campsite, using trees or rocks for遮挡 (shielding) to reduce the impact on the campsite.
  2. Temporary Toilet Construction: Insert two branches/camping poles crosswise into the ground, and use a crossbar to support a large rain cloth or waterproof cloth to form a curtain. Press the bottom with stones. Place a portable bucket with a lid inside, line it with garbage bags and cat litter/decomposing powder. After each use, sprinkle the powder and close the lid to control odor diffusion.
  3. Excrement Disposal: Put all items in special garbage bags and take them back to a campsite or home with disposal facilities. For multi-day deep treks, you can choose biodegradable bags (which accelerate the decomposition of excrement), but you need to confirm whether the use environment allows it.
  4. Equipment List: A toilet tent, a portable toilet, garbage bags, decomposing powder, gloves, and a small shovel, with a total weight of less than two kilograms, combining functionality and portability.
