Have You Seen a Taller Container Building Than This?

Admin September 12, 2026

You've heard that containers can be used to build houses—but have you heard of a skyscraper built from containers? Someone has done it! This skyscraper even won a major award in an international concept design competition.

The project is located in Dharavi, a Mumbai slum spanning more than 500 acres. Building with containers can reduce the extra costs that beams and columns usually bring,

so the designers used containers to form this 100-meter-tall building (about 32 stories).

The building was created to provide temporary housing for Dharavi's overflowing population. It is not only a residential area, but also a work hub, a recycling center, and a gathering place for many small workshops.

People come together here to work and live, making it a truly green community.

After single-story houses are raised and linked front to back, the building forms a comprehensive, highly dense linear district.

The streets are 4 feet wide, lined on both sides with decoration made from recycled cans or plywood.

They give homes ample light and ventilation—true arteries of the residential area.

Structurally, the design requires vertical frame placement, with steel beams connecting every 8 stories. Each apartment is made of three standard-size containers.

In the design, the containers are interleaved so the result meets both aesthetic and ergonomic goals.

Floor slabs on the cantilevers of the lower levels form a covered corridor. Apartments are arranged symmetrically around elevators and stairs. The corridor uses locally recycled clay bricks arranged as screens, and the entrances serve as utility shafts for water and power. The east and west sides of the tower are fitted with solar panels and micro wind turbines to supply hybrid power needs.

The project shows the designer's full understanding of the surrounding environment, community, culture, and the need to improve living standards,

and, by using sustainable resources, creates a new district that prevents another slum from forming.
