Grandpa's Mobile Toilet in Chengdu

Admin September 21, 2026

An elderly man in Chengdu has attracted attention by setting up a makeshift mobile toilet stall using a modified pushcart. While his actions meet the 'urgent needs' of some people, there are hygiene concerns, and renting formal mobile toilets is a more reliable option.

The 'mobile toilet' operated by the elderly man is a simple structure made from an ordinary pushcart, with only a curtain for privacy. It appears in busy areas like snack streets, attracting many tourists and earning the nickname 'the most 'urgently needed' stall in China.' This makeshift facility partially solves the problem of difficult access to public toilets for some people, especially in areas where there are insufficient fixed toilets or they are far away, providing immediate relief.

However, this behavior has also raised concerns among netizens about hygiene issues. Firstly, the frequency of toilet disinfection is hard to guarantee. As it is a personal stall operation lacking a professional hygiene management team and standardized disinfection procedures, timely and effective disinfection may not be possible, easily leading to the growth of bacteria and viruses and increasing the risk of users contracting diseases. Secondly, sewage treatment is also a challenge. The makeshift mobile toilet lacks a complete sewage treatment system, and sewage may be discharged randomly, polluting the surrounding environment and affecting public health and the city's image.

In contrast, the mobile toilet rental services available in Chengdu are more reliable. Mobile toilets are movable and not restricted by the working environment, suitable for various places such as railway stations, docks, tourist attractions, and bustling commercial streets. Moreover, formally rented mobile toilets have better internal configurations than ordinary fixed toilets, usually equipped with complete ventilation, lighting, and sewage discharge systems, providing a better user experience. At the same time, rental companies have professional maintenance teams that regularly clean, disinfect, and maintain the mobile toilets to ensure their hygiene conditions meet standards, effectively avoiding the hygiene problems that may exist in makeshift mobile toilets set up by individuals.
