Foreigners Buying Container Houses from China
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in foreigners purchasing container houses produced in China, primarily due to their advantages of low prices, short construction periods, and comprehensive configurations.

1. Significant Price Advantage and Low Overall Cost
The price of container houses produced in China is much lower than the construction cost in overseas markets. Taking the US market as an example, the overall cost is only one-third to half of that of local construction in the US. For instance, a US couple purchased a 40-foot foldable container house through Alibaba.com, with a total landed cost of approximately RMB 200,000 (including shipping and customs duties), while the cost of building a house of the same size in the US could exceed RMB 400,000. This price difference stems from the cost compression brought about by large-scale production in Chinese factories and the reduced on-site construction costs due to the prefabricated building model.
2. Short Delivery Cycle and High Efficiency
Container houses are prefabricated in factories, with most processes completed in the factory and only assembly required on-site. The entire process from production to occupancy typically takes no more than 3 months: about 1 month for factory production, 1 month for transportation, and only 1 day for installation. In contrast, the average time for local self-built houses in the US from design to completion is 6-12 months. This efficiency is particularly attractive to groups in urgent need of housing, such as those in post-disaster reconstruction or with temporary housing needs.
3. Comprehensive Configuration and Ready-to-Live
Most container houses exported from China are delivered with fine decoration, equipped with basic functional areas such as bedrooms, kitchens, and independent bathrooms, and can be occupied once water and electricity are connected. Some products also integrate additional facilities such as solar panels and smart appliances to meet modern living needs. This 'turnkey' model saves overseas buyers the trouble of self-decoration and lowers the threshold for use.
4. Market Demand-Driven Growth in Export Data
Data shows that in the first half of 2026, the GMV of the mobile housing category on Alibaba.com increased by more than 50% year-on-year, with US buyers accounting for more than 20%; China's prefabricated building exports increased from USD 1.472 billion in 2015 to USD 4.339 billion in 2025, with a growth rate of 45% in the first quarter of 2026. This trend reflects a surge in demand for low-cost, high-efficiency housing solutions overseas, particularly among low-income groups, rural travel enthusiasts, and self-built housing investors.
5. Policy and Supply Chain Support
China's prefabricated building industry chain is mature, with a high degree of coordination from raw material supply to production and logistics, providing a solid foundation for exports. At the same time, cross-border e-commerce platforms (such as Alibaba.com) have simplified overseas procurement processes, further promoting the global sales of container houses.
