Foreigners Build Houses with Containers
It is feasible for foreigners to build houses with containers, and there are already many practical application cases.

I. Technical Feasibility The core of container houses lies in modular design. Over 80% of the processes, including the main structure, interior decoration, and installation of mechanical and electrical pipelines, are completed through factory prefabrication. Only a small number of processes, such as module assembly and water and electricity connection, need to be completed on-site before the houses can be put into use. For example, the modular houses produced by China Construction Steel Structure Jiangsu Co., Ltd. for the North American market are transported in independent modules packed in containers and directly assembled into fully furnished residences upon arrival, with kitchen and bathroom layouts and living room decorations meeting the standards of finished houses on the market. In addition, the all-steel-structured frame container mobile houses produced by Suzhou Zhongnan Steel Structure Co., Ltd. have passed third-party testing and meet a wind resistance standard of Level 12 and an earthquake resistance intensity of 8 degrees, with a frame deformation rate of only 0.2%, complying with the requirements of building structural load codes and proving that their structural safety can meet the needs of conventional projects.
II. Economic Advantages Container houses have significant advantages in terms of cost and efficiency. Taking the US market as an example, the cost of building a self-built single-family house is about 165 US dollars per square foot. For a house of the same area, the labor cost alone is 200,000 US dollars, and the construction period is as long as half a year to one year. In contrast, the comprehensive cost of prefabricated houses in China is only one-third to half of that of local construction. For example, a 40-foot foldable house purchased by an American couple through Alibaba.com had an ex-factory price of 15,800 US dollars for the bare house. After adding transportation and customs duties, the total landed cost was about 28,689 US dollars (about 200,000 RMB), with a production cycle of only 30 days and a total transportation time of about 50 days, which is much lower than traditional construction methods.
III. Flexibility of Application Scenarios Container houses can achieve functional diversification through structural design. For example, the 20-foot double-wing expandable containers produced by Yashun Light Steel for a project in Chile have their side spaces retracted during transportation to be compatible with standard container sizes. When expanded, the indoor usable area reaches 36 square meters and can be configured as a two-bedroom, one-living-room residence or a storage space. In addition, foldable container mobile houses, when folded, have a volume that is only one-fifth to one-third of that when expanded, reducing transportation costs by 25%-40% and increasing storage space utilization by 60%, making them suitable for emergency rescue, short-term turnover, and other scenarios.
