Foreign Prefabricated House Production

Admin September 17, 2026

Foreign prefabricated house production has been developing for a long time, forming a mature model and continuously innovating and progressing.

Development History and Early Exploration

The development of prefabricated houses abroad started early. In 1908, Sears, an old department store in Chicago, USA, included entire houses in its mail-order catalog. It categorized, packaged, and assembled all the materials needed for house construction and sent them to customers along with detailed instructions. Customers could easily build a house within 90 days by following the instructions. From 1908 to 1940, Sears sold 75,000 houses in this way, and many of the houses built over 100 years ago still stand firmly today, laying the foundation for the development of prefabricated houses.

Diverse Prefabricated House Cases

  • Magic Green Home: It creates a prefabricated Hobbit home made of prefabricated arched panels, with flexible modular residences connected together. Without any special skills or heavy equipment, almost anyone can build one in just three days. It can also be covered with soil and geotextile to grow a living green roof.
  • Unity Home: As a zero-net-space prefabricated house, it is fully built in the factory in 5 weeks and assembled on the Expo floor in just 3 days. With an area of 1,620 square feet, it is built according to the LEED V4 Platinum standard and is equipped with the world's largest series of Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certified building products for residential projects. The current price is about $150 per square foot, and it may drop below $140 per square foot in 2016.
  • Robert Gurney's Modular Home: Located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., in Bethesda, Maryland, it is composed of 13 energy-efficient modules. This modern, well-lit house was assembled on-site in just two days.
  • Dubldom Wooden Home: Created by Bio Architects headquartered in Moscow, it is equipped with all basic household facilities, including sanitary equipment, power connections, insulation, wires, water pipes, and custom furniture. Full-height glass windows and skylights fill the gable structure with light, and it can be assembled in one day.
  • Big Box Eco-Luxury Home: Created by the Bert&May Group, it was assembled in just one day for Decorex 2015. This 80-square-meter energy-efficient home is wrapped in structural insulation panels and has a green roof on top. It was built outside the factory in 14 weeks.
