Renovation of Foreign Container Houses
Admin September 15, 2026
The renovation of foreign container houses features diversity, innovation, and practicality, and is widely applied in various fields such as residential, office, and commercial sectors.

Residential Sector
- Flexible Functional Layout: Container houses can be designed with different functional layouts according to needs. For example, Yashun Light Steel produced 20-foot double-wing expansion boxes for a project in Chile. Two sets were designed for residential functions, with an internal layout of two bedrooms, one living room, one kitchen, and one bathroom. Through preliminary planning of internal partitions, doors and windows, functional areas, and water and electricity positions, a relatively complete residential functional layout was achieved within a limited area. A Danish guy renovated a family-style residence using nine containers, decorating various parts of the house and designing large windows to provide natural light inside. A family of four in Zemst, Belgium, transformed a 48㎡ shipping container into a temporary home, including a kitchen, bathroom, small living room, and bedroom.
- Efficient Space Utilization: Container buildings adopt a modular structure, which is easy to stack and facilitates the optimization and adjustment of the structure to achieve the best effect in terms of aesthetics and space saving. For example, the student apartments in the Treptow district of Berlin, Germany, are composed of containers and can accommodate hundreds of students. The exterior is wrapped with weather-resistant steel plates, giving it a stylish appearance.
Office Sector
- Efficient and Economical Construction: Container buildings adopt modular and factory-prefabricated methods, which can significantly shorten the construction period and reduce costs. For example, the Roundhouse administrative building in Camden Town, London, is a five-story building constructed from 72 upgraded and renovated containers. The foundation construction and the production of building modules were carried out simultaneously, and the main structure installation was completed with only 12 days of lifting operations on site. The construction cost was only half of that of traditional buildings.
- Innovative and Unique Design: Containers can be specially renovated and reinforced to achieve open indoor layouts and spatial innovations. For example, the Roundhouse administrative building features three-sided glass balconies, with some areas cantilevered over the locomotive depot passage, breaking the stereotype of the cramped space of containers.
Commercial and Cultural Sectors
- Significant Marketing Effect: Companies such as Daimler and H&M use container 'pop-up' stores as temporary sales spaces or promotional booths, offering exclusive limited-edition products to stimulate customers' curiosity. Market research shows that under the pressure of limited-time purchases, customers spend 20% to 30% more on goods than usual.
- Novel Cultural Display: For example, the Bold Booth MicroTower renovated and designed containers to position them as eye-catching new towers in parking lots. They are equipped with insulated polycarbonate cladding and glass entrances, installed vertically on site, and accommodate security or service personnel.
