Five Myths About Container Buildings
1. The space is too narrow
Because a shipping container's interior is a rectangular volume, interior design can be highly flexible. To combine and connect container spaces more effectively, careful attention to spatial proportions is essential—this calls for dedicated design study. Interlocking layouts can meet your spatial needs with flexible, varied configurations.
2. Containers rust easily
Leading coatings on the market contain a high share of zinc powder. When sprayed evenly onto the container surface, they form a protective zinc layer. Because zinc is more reactive than iron, zinc oxidizes first and protects the iron (cathodic protection in a galvanic cell). Even if the paint film is damaged, the surrounding zinc layer still protects the damaged spot. So this common worry is not a real problem. Service life can reach up to 40 years.
3. Misconceptions about container architecture
Most people still associate container buildings with low-end, temporary housing—especially temporary quarters for construction workers on job sites—and doubt they belong in modern architecture. Only in the past two decades has this new building type gradually entered public awareness, and overseas it is already widespread, such as container shopping plazas in Korea.
4. They feel hot and stuffy
There are many feasible heat-treatment options for containers. Interior design uses varied styles to relieve the monotony of the box and to solve functional needs. Multiple materials provide thermal insulation so spaces stay at normal use temperatures, save energy, and improve both usability and visual quality. Container buildings are well positioned for sound low-carbon development.
5. The appearance is ugly
Overseas, container architecture already takes many forms. Stacked, building-block compositions are used across a wide range of projects—for example container museums, public buildings, hotels, cafes, offices, and more—worth using as reference.
