Ezhou Container House Construction
The construction of container houses in Ezhou is based on freight containers, transformed by modifying doors, windows, insulation layers, and internal facilities into a form of architecture.

I. Materials and Structure
The main body of container houses is made of standard containers crafted from weather-resistant steel (commonly 6 meters and 12 meters in length). The container surface undergoes anti-rust treatment, with internal walls often using gypsum board or metal panels, floors laid with composite flooring or tiles, and insulation materials typically chosen as rock wool or polystyrene boards. For example, the project in Huorong District, Ezhou, selected 3m×6m standard shipping containers with side panels 2.0mm thick and Q235 steel to ensure structural strength.
II. Construction Process
- Foundation Construction: Design the foundation form based on geological conditions (e.g., reinforced concrete strip foundation). After excavation, test the foundation bearing capacity (e.g., ≥180kPa) and set up a drainage system to prevent water accumulation.
- Container Modification: Clean old containers, then cut openings for doors and windows, and weld reinforcement frames; install insulation layers (e.g., 100mm thick polyurethane sandwich panels) and internal walls; lay water and electricity pipelines, reserving interfaces.
- Module Assembly: After completing interior decoration and exterior painting at a professional site, transport to the site for lifting and positioning (e.g., the Ezhou project used bolt rigid connections with accuracy controlled within ±5mm), then seal the exterior walls and install roof facilities (e.g., solar photovoltaic panel brackets).
III. Advantages and Applications
- Economical and Flexible: Modular design facilitates rapid assembly and disassembly, with initial investments starting from tens of thousands of yuan, suitable for temporary offices, warehousing, or short-term residences. The Ezhou project constructed a three-story complex building with 78 containers in just a few weeks.
- Environmentally Friendly and Energy-Efficient: Utilizing old containers reduces steel waste, and construction energy consumption is lower than traditional buildings; however, it is essential to choose environmentally friendly insulation materials (e.g., polyurethane boards with a thermal conductivity of ≤0.024W/(m·K)) to avoid the release of harmful substances.
- Application Scenarios: Commonly found in industrial zones, construction sites (e.g., site offices, dormitories), and suburban areas (e.g., small shops or residences).
IV. Maintenance Points
Regularly inspect the container structure and apply paint for rust prevention, clean the drainage system; strengthen roof and joint sealing during Ezhou's rainy season; inspect the electrical system annually to prevent wire aging; clean or replace internal walls and floors based on usage, and update insulation layers for long-term use to maintain energy efficiency.
