Dog Portable Toilet Design

Admin October 09, 2026

The design of dog portable toilets should take into account convenience, hygiene, and practicality. Here are some common design types and their characteristics:

1. Drawer-style Design: The Core Solution for Easy Cleaning

Drawer-style portable toilets are one of the mainstream designs currently available, with the key advantage of cleaning without getting hands dirty and high efficiency. Through a drawer structure at the bottom or side, users can simply pull a small handle to extract the entire waste collection layer and directly replace the pee pad or clean the dog litter. This type of design usually adopts a two-part structure, with the upper layer serving as a standing platform for the pet and the lower layer being a removable drawer. Some high-end models also feature leak-proof grooves or antibacterial coatings inside the drawer to reduce odor diffusion. For example, some products use high-strength resin materials for the drawer, paired with a washable silicone pad, ensuring durability and ease of repeated use.

2. Three Major Types Classified by Structure

  • Flat-panel Type: This is the simplest structure, consisting of a flat resin panel with a夹层 (interlayer) at the bottom for placing pee pads. It is suitable for small dogs or short-haired dogs but requires frequent replacement of pee pads to prevent urine overflow.
  • Grid Type: Based on the flat-panel design, it adds perforated grilles. Urine seeps through the grid into the pee pad below, while solid waste remains on the surface. This design offers better ventilation, reducing dampness, but requires regular cleaning of the grid gaps.
  • Fence Type: Low fences are added around the perimeter to prevent urine from splashing out during pet excretion while providing a sense of security. It is suitable for puppies or nervous pets, but care should be taken not to make the fence height too high to avoid obstructing pet access.

3. Material Selection and Functional Optimization

The mainstream material is high-strength resin, chosen for its corrosion resistance, ease of cleaning, and light weight. The inner interlayer usually uses highly absorbent specialized pee pads, and some products incorporate activated carbon or biological enzymes to enhance odor removal. Additionally, some designs incorporate user-friendly details, such as non-slip surfaces to reduce pet slipping while standing, adjustable height to accommodate pets of different sizes, and foldable structures for easy storage or portability.

4. Low-cost Alternative: DIY Design

For users with strong hands-on skills, a portable toilet can be made using simple materials:

  • Material List: 3 acrylic panels (forming a three-sided fence), 1 pet tray (as the base), 8 right-angle corner brackets (for fixing the structure), and 1 electrostatic pad (for absorbing moisture and odor).
  • Construction Steps: Connect the acrylic panels into a “U”-shaped fence using the corner brackets, place the pet tray at the bottom to collect waste, and lay the electrostatic pad inside the tray. This design is low-cost but requires regular replacement of the electrostatic pad and offers slightly less stability than commercial products.

Summary: The design of dog portable toilets should revolve around “ease of cleaning, odor prevention, and adaptation to pet habits.” Users can choose between commercial products or DIY solutions based on their pet’s size, usage scenario, and budget.
