Dog Mobile Toilet Position Unchanged

Admin October 01, 2026

Dogs may refuse to use the toilet after its mobile position is changed, but this issue can be resolved through scientific training. Dogs' insistence on a fixed toilet location stems from their instinct to mark territory with scent, seek security, and long-established habits. Repeatedly defecating in a familiar spot is equivalent to continuously using their own scent to 'mark' territorial ownership and establish a connection with the environment. This familiar scent makes dogs feel at ease, so they instinctively tend to return to the 'correct-scent' old spot. Changing the location disrupts their accustomed 'routine', triggering hesitation and resistance. To resolve this issue, it is essential to follow the core principles of positive guidance and immediate rewards. Specific training methods are as follows:

Thorough Preparation and Scientific Location Selection: Choose a fixed, quiet, and minimally disturbed new area for the dog. Once selected, do not change it frequently to avoid triggering resistance due to environmental changes. Prepare an appropriate 'toilet' based on the dog's size: for small dogs or puppies (weight < 10kg), a grid dog toilet with a fence is recommended to prevent urine splashing; for medium to large dogs (weight ≥ 10kg), an extra-large flat dog toilet or the placement of non-slip urine pads is necessary to ensure comfort during defecation.

Timely Guidance and Correction: For puppies, active intervention is needed to help establish new habits. When observing that they are about to defecate in the wrong location, immediately and directly carry them to the selected area and patiently wait for them to complete defecation. Repeat this process to help dogs gradually form a conditioned reflex of 'new location = defecation'.

Food Reward Reinforcement: For adult dogs, food rewards are a more effective correction method. When the dog successfully defecates in the new location, immediately give it its favorite treats or verbal praise to make it clear that 'defecating here = receiving a reward'. As training progresses, even without rewards, the dog will proactively go to the new location out of habit.

Clear Prohibition of Incorrect Behavior: When discovering that the dog defecates in the wrong location, express dissatisfaction through loud scolding to make it aware that such behavior is not allowed. The scolding should be timely and consistent to avoid the dog being unable to understand the reason for the mistake due to delays or ambiguous attitudes. Through repeated corrections, the dog will gradually take the initiative to find the correct defecation location.
