Do Container Houses Have Two Floors?

Admin September 17, 2026

Whether a container house has two floors needs to be judged based on specific circumstances and cannot be generalized.

Cases of Non-standard Two-story Buildings

If container houses are stacked to form two or more spaces but have not undergone formal architectural design, approval, and construction processes, they may not be recognized as standard two-story buildings. For example, simply stacking two containers without structural reinforcement or modifications in line with building codes. In such cases, the connections between containers may not be secure enough, and the overall structural safety cannot be guaranteed. In the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes or strong winds, they are prone to collapse and other dangerous situations. Moreover, such simply stacked container houses may only be regarded as temporary or non-standard building forms and may face the risk of demolition in some areas because they do not meet local basic building requirements, such as those related to fire safety and earthquake resistance.

Cases of Standard Two-story Buildings

If the design and construction of container houses comply with relevant codes and have been approved, they may be regarded as legal building forms. However, whether they are considered two-story buildings still needs to be judged based on the specific design. During the design phase, professional architects will consider factors such as the load-bearing capacity and structural stability of containers and carry out reasonable modifications and reinforcements. For example, adding reinforcing bars at the connection points of containers to improve the overall shear and bending resistance; setting up reasonable stairs and passageways to meet the requirements for personnel evacuation. During construction, operations will be carried out strictly in accordance with the design plan to ensure that every link complies with building codes. After such design and construction and approval by relevant departments, such container houses can be regarded as legal building forms. Nevertheless, even if these conditions are met, to determine whether they are two-story buildings, one still needs to look at the specific design, such as whether the floor height and functional zoning meet the definition of a two-story building.
