Disadvantages of Container Houses
Admin September 16, 2026
The disadvantages of container houses are mainly reflected in fire safety hazards, poor living experience, structural safety hazards, and the risk of illegal use.

I. Fire Safety Hazards
- Poor Fire Resistance of Buildings: Container houses are mostly supported by steel structures. In a fire, the temperature in the fire scene can reach 800-1000℃, far exceeding the critical temperature (500℃) at which steel structures lose stability. Ordinary container panel houses may collapse within about 10 minutes after a fire, hindering personnel evacuation and material rescue.
- Flammable Core Materials: Some containers use flammable materials such as polyurethane and polystyrene to fill the core of the panels. These materials have low ignition points and poor flame retardancy, and will burn rapidly when exposed to high temperatures or open flames, exacerbating the spread of the fire.
- Narrow Passageways Affecting Evacuation: Some users, in pursuit of area, do not reserve safety passageways that comply with regulations, and even occupy evacuation space to build containers. In the event of a fire, personnel evacuation is hindered.
II. Poor Living Experience
- Poor Thermal Insulation Performance: Due to material issues, low-end products have difficulty ensuring thermal insulation effects, and high-priced products need to be selected for improvement.
- Poor Sound Insulation Effect: Metal materials transmit sound obviously, and additional sound insulation treatment is required to reduce noise interference.
- Small Space: The internal space of containers is limited. Long-term residence can easily lead to physical and mental discomfort, and poor ventilation and lighting may result in odors due to environmental pollution.
III. Structural Safety Hazards
- Limitations of Steel Structures at High Temperatures: The strength of exposed steel structures decreases significantly at around 600℃, making them prone to deformation and collapse. Professional fireproof cladding treatment is required.
- Risk of Rust in Humid Environments: Steel materials are prone to rust when exposed to humid environments for a long time. Long-term anti-corrosion treatment is required to ensure durability.
IV. Risk of Illegal Use
Some container houses are identified as illegal buildings due to non-compliance with urban appearance standards or the presence of safety hazards, and may face rectification or demolition risks. For example, a hotel illegally set up container panel houses for accommodation and was legally removed by law enforcement authorities.
